He's already released as many years of returns as McCain did (I believe it will be one year more than McCain once he releases 2011). It's an issue because the Obama campaign keeps bringing it up and the media takes up the charge on their behalf.
I watched one particularly maddening Meet the Press segment this weekend where the two questions asked of Ed Gillespie were basically "don't you think Romney should release all his returns" followed by "does the Romney campaign disavow making the US olympic team's uniforms in China?"
Hilarious Trump quote: "Donald Trump said Monday morning that the GOP nominee should release more of his tax returns — as soon as President Obama releases his college records."
It's a battle to see how far we can distract ourselves from issues that actually matter.
The main issue is over the time that Romney actually served at Bain. He says he resigned in 1999 to run the Olympics. But, people are pulling out forms from as late as 2002 saying that Romney was still CEO, President, Owner of Bain. So, that has folks saying - whoa, if you left in 1999, why are you still showing up as the guy running the organization in 2002?
So he's refusing to release the tax returns during those years. Ah. Now I see why it's important, at least from the campaign side. Especially since he's accusing Obama of lying/stretching the truth.

Because it absolutely doesn't matter if Romney was employed/heading up a company that did things he is now forcefully insisting he wouldn't do or could avoid?

Nods, then you add the were you lying and that could spell big trouble facet, you've got yourself a nice little campaign commercial.
Can someone explain to me why Romney is hell bent on running on just his business experience and not any of his tenure as a governor?
I think the tax returns & Bain employment are two separate issues Obama is making. People are asking for many years of tax returns, mostly not when he worked at Bain. The issue regarding when he worked at Bain has to do with whether or not he decided to outsource jobs. From what I understand at least. I don't give a rat's ass about any of this b/c I think it's completely irrelevant to national issues, so I haven't investigated it too much.

Because all he accomplished in Mass as governor was to raise taxes... err I mean "fees" and pass health care reform. Neither sit well with the party.

I haven't noticed that at all. I've heard him talk about cutting deficits w/o raising taxes, vetoing stuff, cutting red tape, etc. All stuff from his term as governor, so I'm not sure how he's avoiding talking about it.

They are; but it looks to me (at least from Liberal talk land) that they are tying the two together kinda as a 1, 2 punch.
Romney can say - I left in 1999, so I didn't have anything to do with company X,Y,Z. Then someone rolls out - Yeah, but you have XYZ documents showing that you were still running the place. So, how do we know you didn't profit off of the outsourcing of company XYZ to Timbuktu.

Hmmm. I never see those interviews. All I've heard of late has been Bain, Bain, Bain. 1999 (wonders if Prince will start singing), and the ACA can't work like what we did in Mass.

He doesn't lean far enough right politically during his governorship to appease the base. They start touting his governorship and it gives Obama plenty of ammunition to point out stances he's held that aren't exactly diametrically opposed to Obama's and the Dems. They're slamming Obamacare, yet he did something extremely similar during his tenure for the state, or "Romneycare." He raised taxes and did other things his constituency isn't exactly a fan of. His business record is much more geared to the right, with more room to wiggle.
So he was still employed/paid by Bain at the time, though, which is what is in dispute with the "show your tax returns" cries, correct?
Like I said I don't think the "show me your tax returns" has to do with Bain. It's whether or not Romney had anything to do with Bain outsourcing jobs and layoffs. The "show me your tax returns" stuff is when you ask someone to do something out of the ordinary and then when they don't comply you say it's evidence that they have something to hide.

He raised taxes in Mass. He just preferred to call them "Fees". Fees for court filings, business licenses, etc.

Obama is the one constantly bringing up Bain b/c he knows it will (and has) damage(d) Romney if he can prove Romney was responsible for destroying jobs. Hence Romney defending his Bain record. It's the latest talking point, so it's obvious brought up a lot in interviews. But in speeches I've heard he speaks about his gubernatorial experience.

Yes I remember that from the previous election. And I'm still fine with people who use certain services paying for them, as opposed to a tax that applies to everyone equally. Unlike John Roberts I don't consider fees to be taxes, but this is all getting off track.

pffft... Let it get off track. We haven't had a civil non-onesided political discussion in forever.
Aren't republicans now saying, in damage control mode, that Romney needs to pony up the tax papers?
I can't remember who it was. My H was yelling about this last night, but I was too busy trying to veg out on pinterest and ignored this commentary. LOL But yes, a couple of GOP members have been all "If you don't have anything to hide, show us your papers!"

That's fine. I'm just by myself in here and it's hard on a phone to follow a discussion about Romney's tax returns and also debate random claims made during the campaign about his previous work experience.
