Sophia's ears were pierced in September. They got infected in January or February, I took them out for a week, cleaning every day. They healed. I put one earring back in, she didn't let me put the other one. She was still going around with just one earring as of Saturday. I kept cleaning it regularly. Then Saturday it looked red so I took the earring out and cleaned her ear. Yesterday it was red and swollen and bleeding and leaking yellow gunk I have been cleaning it with warm water and using polysporin and it looks a bit better today, but I kept her home and we are seeing the pedi at 2. My poor baby. I had hers done at the mall. Anna's were done at the pedi at 9 months and never had any issues. But maybe Sophia's ears are just super sensitive? Anyway, I am not putting the earrings back in. We will see when she is older. MIL told me that she had never been able to wear earrings overnight. She always removes them and cleans them every night, even though she only wears gold. So maybe Sophia's ears are like that. Ugh. I feel awful.

:-( Try not to be too hard on yourself. Some people are just more sensitive! My DD's both got their ears pierced this past December. At the same time, by the same people. We were at a mall.
One has had not even a HINT of any problems at all. The other had nothing but issues and ultimately we had to let the holes close. Obviously we took the same exact care with both girls ears - I guess my one DD is just much more sensitive than the other.
Some people just have sensitive skin. I don't happen to like earrings on babies and small kids but she's your kid and if you like it - go for it. For the first 10 years or so that mine were pierced I didn't have problems. I bought the hypo-allergenic earrings thinking I'd be even safer. I had so many infections I had to let them close, wait a few years and have them re-done. I still almost never wear studs, I usually wear hoops or dangly stuff. However, X got me diamond studs for Christmas and they don't cause a problem - or haven't yet. Hopefully it all clears up quickly.
I'm allergic to nickel and have to be particular with my earrings or they get infected too.
I know with piercings from the tattoo shop you're not supposed to use neosporin or anything like that on them. Something with how they work to heal it? Maybe try some tee tree oil or salt water.
I had my ears pierced on 3 different occasions. Each time it lasted a month before I gave up and let the hole close. I've accepted I will never wear earrings. And yet my belly piercing was no problem.
What kind of earrings were you using? I have a nickel allergy and that's what my ears do when I have earrings in that have nickel.
14 ct gold
When I got my ears pierced they used 14ct gold and I had a hard time getting mine to heal. Turns out I was allergic to the gold. I changed them out for stainless posts and my ears healed and I haven't had a problem since. I can even wear gold posts now, just couldn't in an open type of wound.
See if you can find earrings with surgical steel posts. It sounds more like sensitivity than an infection. With an infection, you will have a lot of stinky green/yellow pus.
My dd was having the same issues. Her problem is that so many "sensitive" earrings are still have traces of things she is allergic to. I bought her a bunch of piercing studs and ever since then she has had no infections at all. You can get them really cheap on amazon.

Phoenix was the same way. One ear in particular took forever to heal and was always gunky. So I put in some tiny little white gold hoops (I was thinking it was a nickel allergy) and kept cleaning them with a saline solution. I think being able to air our some really helped and it's pretty much fine now.

Another vote for I bet it's the earrings. The reason I don't wear them anymore is I started reacting to all of them. Pretty sure I can do platinum, but haven't tried them.
I didn't know there were earring haters out there. Why? Because she's a kid? That's a lame thing to be hating on. My DD has been begging for earrings all year. She's 4 and I just dont want to deal with them so I won't let her do it until she's old enough to care for them herself. That just makes me a lazy parent. Not a hater! Hope your DD is ok and figures out whats causing the irritation.

My sister has always had issues with hers - especially posts. She finally got them to heal with really thin gold wire hoops. The doctor told her to wash her hands and then spin them around. She also had to take them out for overnight.
They healed, but she has a nickel allergy and rarely wears anything. She wears pure gold stuff very occasionally.
My oldest had the same issues, turned out she was allergic to nickel. She hasn't worn earrings in about 10 years now. Every once in a while she'll say she wants to go get them repierced (she's 15) but she hasn't gone through with it yet.

I always had issues with mine growing up but I have no issue now. I had to let mine close quite a few times and I'm surprised by mom let me re-do them so many times.
When I got my belly button pierced, I used a salt water spray and never had issues.
I really would love to pierce DD's ears but I'm scared for this reason. I guess I have to wait.
someone poasted last week about taking their kid to a tattoo/piercing parlour and how much different (better!) the experience was compared to those places in the mall. makes sense and if i ever have to get my kid's ears pierced, i would do that for sure.
That was me. And yes, totally different and better at the tattoo parlor!
Don't beat yourself up. Like a pp said, I also have a nickel allergy and was forever having problems with earrings as a kid. it's gotten a lot better the last several years.
Ditto the saline solution on her ears. E had a fierce infection a couple of months ago....I mean so gross! I took her earring out (which apparently is not the thing to do). Luckily we were able to pop them back in after it cleared up.

This is me, too, because my skin is so sensitive to metals. i have ONE pair of studs I've worn almost nonstop for probably 10 years. My slkin is so sensitive to metals that the metal of the button stud on the waistband of my jeans will cause a rash if I dont tuck in a t shirt underneath!
I posted a separate update but basically my pedi said it is an infection and not an allergy. Prescription antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics for ten days and no earrings.
