I wore skirts for my school uniform and always wore shorts underneath them. I'm pretty sure that I was in college before I wore a skirt without shorts underneath for the first time! (And now I've semi-reverted back, as I usually wear skimmies under my skirt
The reason I posted was that this morning my DD (age 5) and I had a 50 minute battle because she wanted to wear a dress to school because it is hot which is fine but she REFUSED to put on shorts/capris/leggings under it. She tried every short and capri that she had and claimed that they bothered her in some way. Her other argument was the she was wearing a dress to be cool and that wearing something under it would make her hot. She did have a point there. The thing is that besides modesty reasons she likes to play in this giant sandbox at school and I don't like her sitting on there with her dress riding up and all the nasty sand around her. Also everyday that she goes to school without leggings/capris she comes home with skinned knees.I should tell her all the MMM girls wear them you have to as well.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

DD wears the children's place playground shorts. Her school asks for them to wear something under dresses.
With sales & coupons, I only paid about $3.50 a pair for them but I had to order from their website, not stocked in stores by us. They are thinner and more fitting than bike shorts. The size 4 fit my petite girl (she's 3 & weights 28 lbs) with a little room to grow. She's never complained about them being uncomfortable.
I thought it was kinda stupid. I don't really care about the modesty of a 3yo - which is how old DD was when daycare suggested she wear shorts under her dresses.
Then I saw her in her leotard at gymnastics and how she never gave a thought to what her clothes were covering when she scratched an itch... so yeah, modesty shorts are a good thing, lol.
Yes - Shorts, skirt, leggings, or tights, depending on the weather, but always something. She is very active, has a hard time even being right-side up sometimes We've always done this. And as a side note, she will only wear dresses, so this is an everyday thing.
