DH started day one of potty training with DS yesterday. I don't know if this is a specific method, but we're just setting a timer and having him sit on the potty every 30-35 minutes. Here's the question -- he pees on the potty almost every time he sits on it. It seems like it's really often since it's every 30 minutes and it's not just a dribble. Is this common? Is it just because he's used to just peeing whenever in his diaper? Is this how often toddlers actually need to go to the potty?
I would guess he is pushing out whatever pee he has because he has learned that is what you do on the potty and I am guessing he is getting praised for doing so, which is awesome. My DD, on the other hand, likes to sit on the potty but has never actually peed on it.
Start slowly increasing the timing in between pees so he learns to hold it in - if you are doing 30-35 min, do that for a few more days and then try 40-45 min, etc. Sounds like a great start!
He had never peed on the potty until a few weeks ago when I went to change his diaper first thing in the morning and it was dry. I immediately went and put him on the potty because I knew he would have to go and he did! I was as surprised as anyone! After that, we sat him on the potty every morning and it was hit or miss whether he would go or not.
Thanks for the advice. I just pictured me or DH having to take him to the potty every 30 minutes from now on and thought we might never leave the house again.

We just started potty training DD2 this month. She's consistently telling us when she needs to use the bathroom now but she still goes really often, probably every half hour or so. I somewhat remember this with DD1, too, when she first started potty training. I think it's that she's not fully emptying her bladder when she goes; as soon as the flow stops, she wants to get off the toilet. They eventually get better with this.
