Unfortunately, I'd expect everything to be really expensive because it is super peak time to go to Puerto Rico. I'd also expect accommodations to be really expensive.
Any tips on getting a decent flight/fare? We have a family vacation with extended family from 26 Dec 2014 to 1 Jan 2015. We need to fly from D.C. (preferably DCA, but BWI or IAD would work also) into San Juan, and then rent a car. There will be 5 of us, 3 will be my young children, so long layover would suck. I looked a little and everything seems to be expensive. Any tips on airlines or other places to check?
Southwest, American and Spirit will be your best bet..
SW would be BWI
Spirit is BWI also.
AA does DCA and BWI to SJU but you have a stop in MIA

This is true. I went home via PR every year for about 5 yrs for xmas and basically 12/15 -1/10 tickets are insane.
It's pretty guaranteed to be expensive for those dates. If you can fly on the 25th and 31st you might save a little bit. But if you're days aren't flexible, then the 26th - 1st are generally some of the most expensive days to fly surrounding Christmas and New Years.
Prices probably won't go down too much, so if you see a decent fare now, I'd probably just go ahead and buy it.

Southwest/Airtran is only booking through the end of the Oct at the moment - they are supposed to be releasing more dates this month - wait and see what those are if the other flights are too much. See about JetBlue. Change your dates up if possible. Kayak lets you matrix it 3+- days. They do not search SW so you will need to go to SW's site to look - you can sign up to get an alert when they release the dates.

Definitely wait to check Southwest. They have direct flights into San Juan from BWI, and we found it to be significantly cheaper than the other airlines when we went in April.
