First time mom trying to figure out what my kid is doing. My 5mo DS has been squealing/fussing while he's eating for about a month now. Nipple is in the mouth and he pulls back to squawk. I tried a slower and a faster nipple. Nothing else is different temperature wise. Doesn't seem to have gas. Is definitely hungry. Sometimes sounds like he's gulping. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. He doesn't do it when he's really sleepy in the motn.

Early in the month he had a cold and they checked his ears when I took him in. He'd just started the crying at his bottle so I figured the slight snotty nose was the reason. It's been several weeks since then and still going strong with acting frustrated with his bottle. My childcare provider describes it as being mad at it.
DS went through something like this stage around 4 months. The midwife called it a nursing strike. I think they start paying attention to more things around them and get distracted and don't want to sit still and nurse. That's my guess since he still eats well when sleepy.

My kid is 5 months and doing exactly this for the last month. In the daytime she will take 1 or 2 ounces and then start shaking her head removing herself from the nipple. Any attempts to reoffer it results in her chewing on the nipple. An hour later she will cry with hunger and will take the rest. No issues at night. I just follow her cues and feed her that way. Some days it feels like she is eating almost every hour. She used to do something similar when she was tiny - feed for a few minutes and remove herself and act like she was full. At that time, it turned out she had reflux. This time she is on reflux medication and is happy, just doesn't want to eat 4 ounces at once. I am going to try the fast flow nipple next but I think it is the need to see all the things distraction going on.
I took her out of the infant carrier to feed her at the supermarket and at Olive Garden last month. She was shaking her head like crazy. Like she couldn't decide what to look at. I decided that for future trips out, I will feed her inside her infant seat and then only take her out to burp.

Hmmmm. DS turned 4 months over the weekend and has started doing this the past 3 days. He is refusing to nurse sometimes, especially on the left side, and is not drinking as much from his bottles. He seems healthy, no fever, ect.
I would guess either EI or teeth. DS had similar "mad at the bottle" behavior when he was cutting his 4 top teeth at once (he was older - 8-ish months).

We tried a different bottle today and he seems much happier. Went from dr.browns to a glass evenflow. Maybe it's something about the airflow and teething.thanks all!
