Favorite City in France (other than Paris vicinity)

We are starting to plan a trip for next year to Swizterland/France. We have been to Paris, Normandy, and the Loire Valley. What other cities have you been to that you loved?

I adore Toulouse, am probably the only person that found Marseilles charming, find Nice/Cannes exciting and Menton adorable.

Loved Aix-en-Provence

Cascassonne was one of the prettiest places I've been though I suppose it's really a town. The whole area is gorgeous.

If you're coming from Suisse Romande then Anncey is close and it is gorgeous. Chamonix is worth visiting as well if you want to do some hiking (or kist puts about a cute town with snow capped peaks in the background).

And ditto iammalcolmx about Villefranche.

Really, the whole eastern part of the country is gorgeous and under visited outside of ski season.

Provence - specifically Avignon, Arles, etc. I love it!

Moe@moe, you're not the only one! Marseille is one of my favorite cities anywhere.

I also like the French Basque country, but think Biarritz is over-rated. I was more taken with smaller towns in that area like St. Jean de Luz.

Thanks Everyone, I'm excited to research all of these! kooshball Normandy was our favorite (Bayeux)! We want to see other parts of the country but it's hard not to go back there again
