What about supporting your local USO? I'm local to the Seattle (Sea-Tac) one which is the busiest in the nation from what I understand. They support 7-10K service members and their families each month in a space not much larger than my house. They're in the process of doing a build-out in a new space but having trouble getting the financial support. They're about 1/3 the way to their $1.5M goal for their build-out in over a year. The local YMCA gets better support than they do. (Just checked charitynavigator and they're a 3 star organization...they spend too much on fundraising so the financials are a bit low. Fisher House, Homes for Heroes and DAV are all four-star but larger organizations (which, yay, I support) if you're interested in going that route. I'm a huge fan of Fisher House. I wish I could remember the family support group organization that someone told me about some time back that I meant to look into.) I did check CN for SWAN and they're too small and don't file the forms to give complete disclosure that they require for a full check. They file a shortened 990-N rather than an IRS-990) However, based on what SWAN represents, I'd not be uncomfortable in giving them financial support.

I love the USO, but due to personal experience, I'm particularly interested in women's SHARP type issues.
