We've just decided to take a long weekend in Savannah/Tybee Island over the 4th of July. Haven't researched anything yet but thought I'd ask here if anyone has recommendations on where to stay? Eat? We'll be driving in so we'll have a car.
Stay - we liked the Dresser-Palmer House. It's a bed and breakfast but much more privacy (more like a small hotel, really). It's right next to Forsyth Park and walking distance to everything in the historic district.
Eat - we loved Alligator Soul for dinner. Also, Vic's and Soho South Cafe for lunch/brunch
Do - ghost tour, Mercer-Williams House (read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before you go), walking around
As far as eating- another vote for Alligator Soul and if you like beer, Crystal Beer Palace. They have great burgers!
Bonaventure Cemetery is worth a tour. And I highly recommend doing a ghost tour, if you're interested, while you're there. Blue Orb is a good company to go through.
I'm from Tybee. That weekend will be crazy. Book your stay as early as possible. Fireworks will be on River St on the fourth, Tybee usually has them the night before so you can attend both if you want. Traffic getting off Tybee after fireworks is a nightmare.
To eat: AJs on the back river for seafood, awesome margaritas and a great sunset Sundae Cafe- lunch special on Friday is fish and grits, to die for. Lunch is casual, dinner is fancier, make a reservation in advance. They have a lobster Mac and cheese that is unreal. Stingrays is good for seafood too, Crab Shack is OK, good location and atmosphere. For breakfast, the Breakfast Club is the best, it's expensive though and has long lines. Sunrise across the street is good too though, and they have a buffet.
edit: North Beach Grill, on the beach by lighthouse, is good too.
I was limited to where I could eat because I need a gluten free menu. We had a really good time at the Olde Pink House and the food was really good.
We were not impressed with Vics on the River at all. The food, the service, everything was a big disappointment.
It's worth the drive to Bonaventure and I could have stayed a whole day there walking around.
Some other things we did: -Antique stores: 37th Street Antiques and Wright Square Antique mall. We also walked down Broughton St that had a lot of (non-antique) shops. -City market to drink and watch the band -The Mercer Williams and the Andrew Lowe house -Cathedral of St John
We also had a really good time at Rocks on the Roof (above the Bohemian Hotel) it was very romantic and perfect to watch the sunset.
