Hi- Looking at flights for our summer vacation (nothing like last minute planning) There are comparable flights on Delta and Air Tran. Prices and times are very similar and they both connect through ATL. I've been on Delta before, no strong opinions one way or the other. Never flown Air Tran, but I know they are a part of Southwest, and that's pretty much all I know. So all things being pretty equal is there a reason to pick one over the other?
Airtran to me has uncomfortable seats and older planes and I feel they don't give as good of service as Delta. I live in Atlanta and fly Delta almost every time I fly. Delta is based out of Atlanta so I find their service here to be the best.

Live in Atlanta and used to fly Airtran all the time domestically and Delta for International trips. With the Southwest transition I am switching to Delta while avoiding those awful MD's like a damn plague( which is difficult when flying Delta domestically). I have never had a single issue with Airtran and their aircraft's are not any older than the other majors.

I think I just do it to avoid MD-88's most of the flights I fly are on bigger aircraft.
I personally would go with airtran. Delta always seems to have overbooked flights and they don't put you and your travel partner together, everyone just gets randoms seats.

I fly to DC too much to avoid MD-88's on Delta. Which is why I kinda started flying Airtran in the first place. My upcoming trip to Chicago is the first domestic flight I have taken on Delta in a long time. International is a different story. I fly them so much International I can actually give advice about what menu items to NOT pick.
