Where is the best place to stay in Savannah in September? I'd be looking to do a mix of checking out the downtown/historic area and spending some time at the beach. I'd prefer to stay beachfront if there are any good recommendations. Or is the beach there gross? I've never been to GA, I dont know anything about the area! I could do a hotel or use like VRBO to rent a home/condo. We'd probably stay Wed or Thurs to Sat and then drive to a suburb north of Atlanta to visit our friends.
The Beach is at Tybee Island did you want to stay in Savannah itself or go to Tybee?
I guess I'd rather stay on Tybee Island as long as its not too long of a commute to Savannah for site-seeing. Or would it be better to stay in Hilton Head and just hit Savannah for the day on the way to or from ATL? I've been looking for hotels and see a lot of stuff in Hilton Head coming up.
Downtown Savannah is about 20 minutes from the beach. If you want to stay ocean front, then check out the Desoto Beach Hotel. The Ocean Plaza is also kinda ocean front, but a parking lot is between the hotel and beach. Or you can try VRBO if you don't want a hotel! or Mermaid Cottages, Tybee Vacation Rentals.
There are a lot of great places downtown on Bay Street, ARIA and the Bohemian, and chains like Hyatt, Holday Inn Express, Doubltree, etc.

When we went up to Savannah for the marathon last November. It was nice, clean and a great value for the price. It's also in a central location and right across from the water and were able to walk everywhere with no problems. We're going up again this November and we'll be staying at the Holiday Inn across the street because the Hampton Inn was a little more expensive this time around.
We just did a week long house rental on Tyber. We had been to Savannah before and were mostly going for the beach this time. We did go into town twice to do touristy things. I feel like Savannah is a pretty small town so that worked for us, and Tybee is only about 20 minutes away...an easy commune.
Tybee and Hilton Head are basically polar opposites in terms of beaches - Tybee is very small, laid back, families but not much to "do". Hilton Head (we drove through but didn't stay) was the spas, golf course kind of beach vacation. Which kind are you looking for?
We are definitely looking for a more laid back kind of vacation. I do want to do some of the touristy stuff in Savannah but would like about as much lazy time to lay at the beach or pool. Since ATL is over 3 hours away and then on Sat we'll be driving about 4 hours to visit our friends for the remainder of the trip, I definitely dont want to be go-go-go for 3 days. We'll be staying in Savannah or on Tybee from Wed to early Sat am. I'm hoping since we'll be going in Sept that all the kids will be back in school and it wont be as busy on both Tybee and in Savannah.
