We are going to Sanibel for 9 days in a few weeks. Will be there over the 4th of July. I went once for a day trip many years ago, but can't remember much. It will just be my husband and I, no kids. Just looking for any tips, insights, must see, must do etc. thanks!

I don't have much insight for you, as I was only there for one day last year during a trip to Naples. All I remember my host saying is that everything is more expensive on the island, and to stock up on groceries, gas, etc before driving over to the island. Sorry I don't have more info to offer! Hope you have a great time. The beaches there were beautiful!
We have only done day trips to Sanibel, but love, love, love the Mucky Duck. Really cool vibe and sunsets that can't be beat. Go early, enjoy some music and a cocktail, and then some dinner. The service and the food is always top notch.
If you want to leave Sanibel and do a day trip off island, Cape Coral has a fun new eatery called Ford's Garage. Good bar food, and lots of fun stuff to look at on the walls, etc. We also like to go down to Rumrunners and The Joint, off the Cape Coral Parkway. Both are on the water.
