Hi Ladies, I have used YNAB since January and started with just my checking account. Last night I added our savings account as an on budget account and entered all the 2014 transactions. I did some research online and figured out that you just "transfer" between accounts and no category is needed, I just allocate money to the "Joint Savings" category I created. Here comes my question:
We recently went on a vacation, I wanted all the debit card transactions to go against the savings, so would I just enter them as debits from the "Joint Savings" category?
Any advice for wanting to have different savings pots (Christmas, New House Fund, etc.) if the money is all in one account?
Is there a better way to deal with two on budget accounts than I describe above?
I think I would let the vacation debits come out of the checking account under the vacation budget line item and then transfer the money from savings to bring your vacation budget back to where it should be after your spending. Although sometimes these things make sense in my head and then actually inputting in YNAB produces a different result
For gifts and vacation, I budget for these and leave the money in our checking account. Any savings that will be spent in the next 6 months or so is in the checking account. Everything else longer term gets its own on-budget savings account (I use Capital One online accounts for efund, renovation fund, car fund.)

The other ladies answered your first question.
For your second question, it doesn't matter where the money is physically located (so you can move it to avoid an overdraft situation or to earn interest, etc.). Your budget tells you what you can spend. I personally have a category for each savings item (Car Replacement, Home Repairs, Major Car Repairs, Emergency Fund, etc.). You can lump them under one heading/master category if you want and tie that total back to your Savings Account balance, but it's really not necessary.

Thanks ladies! Your replies are very helpful. I think I will make savings subcategories to keep organized. I am so glad I learned about this program on MM it's been a lifesaver!
