We just went to NYC, and a friend who's living there brought us to Bianca (http://biancanyc.com/). The food was seriously amazing, and SO CHEAP! My husband and I split gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce (omg amazing and $11) and a thin sliced, pan cooked filet mignon (maybe $18?) and a salad to start. Everything was delicious.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.

I moved away last year, so my recs might be out of date, but my favorite fancy places are EMP and the pasta tasting at Babbo.
Marea is also very good.
For more casual, love Co and Motorino for pizza. Piccolo Angolo is a great neighborhood Italian place, but you need reservations. Blue Ribbon for fried chicken.

4 of my favorites! Re: Piccolo Angolo, did you hear that Renato passed away? I was so sad to hear that.
@spunbutterfly -- have you looked on Opentable? I see lots of restaurants in midtown east with 4th of July reservations. That's actually typically a good time to go out to dinner because so many people are out of town that restaurants that are usually busy aren't. I like The Smith -- it is a younger atmosphere than most of the fancyish restaurants in that area (a lot are business dinner-focused)
