I've been in my current position for 8.5 years. I like what I do, enjoy the people I work with but there is a slim to none chance of advancement. The pay isn't great and I'm at the top of my pay scale. I've been ready to make a change for a couple of years but haven't had any luck applying for new jobs or finding something that I want to do. For me, job satisfaction is more important than a higher salary so I'm a bit picky about what I apply for.
There is a job in a different department in my same organization. The money is great, the schedule is ideal. I'm just not sure if I want to actually DO the job. These positions rarely open up-basically, never. I was told by the person who previously held the position (she was promoted) that I would be silly not to apply. She said she would be shocked if more people in my department didn't apply.
It seems like a no brainer yet I'm conflicted. My baby is 3 months old. I'm JUST back at work, getting into this new routine. I'm only working 4 days a week to make the transition easier. I'm not sure I want to do the duties of the job or work under the supervisor. But I also feel like I'm potentially blowing a HUGE opportunity for more money and a better schedule. The deadline to apply is Monday so I need to make a decision fast so I can prepare myself for the application and interview.

It seems like you already have a bunch of change, so what's a little more? I'd apply and see what happens. You don't have to accept if you don't think it's the right choice.
If it makes you feel any better, I am in the process of applying for new jobs for less travel/better schedule. I understand how scary it is, but you have to do what is best for you and your family!

Thanks everyone. I am going to apply and just take it one step at a time. My director told a co-worker that she thinks I am ready for a new challenge and would support me completely so that was nice to hear.
Definitely apply. If you interview and feel like the job isn't a good fit, no big deal. I will say, as a working mom, if I didn't enjoy my job it would be so much harder so even if it seems like the hours/travel/whatever would be better, if you don't like the role don't feel like you have to take it but address that when you have to, not now.
This is exactly how I feel. My number one priority is job satisfaction. Money and scheduling is nice but I need to be happy about how I spend time away from my kid each day. I have some concerns about the position but I guess those are things I can ask at the interview, if I make it that far. Thanks!

I've decided to apply! Hopefully I can squeeze in some time this weekend to put together my application. The fun part will be talking to my boss about it. She doesn't handle this stuff well. I talked to another manager in my department (who is amazing) for advice and she said "well, she will just have to get over it." LOL. Since I won't see my boss before the deadline on Monday, I sent her an email. Tuesday should be fun.
