This happened when we took our cats named Riley and milo. We thought they were girl and boy respectively. Turns out they were opposite. We kept their names.

It's hard for me to tell the sex of the kittens for the first about 10 weeks of their lives. One of the kittens from almost a year ago was named George after the baby prince being born. She is now Georgia.
I adopted 2 cats about 4.5 years ago. We were told the larger one was the girl, so for about 6 weeks we called them their new names accordingly... yeah, not so much. THAT was a shock. I mean, I guess I should have checked, but they are persians and therefore fluffy. They were already fixed, but the vet could clearly tell when my husband took them in for shots. We switched their names and got used to it pretty quickly.

When we lost my first childhood cat (she was around long before I was) my mom agreed to get a kitten from a friend who took in a pregnant stray. My mom made it a point that she didn't want a male and risk spraying. So we got a female. I named her Holly since it was around Christmas and I was 10.
I still remember the look on the vets face when he asked us what gender we thought our new cat was during his first appt. Holly wasn't a Holly after all.

Neuters are definitely more MM then spays!
My vet charges 50 for first shots, spay (or neuter) and nail trim.
Am I getting ripped off paying the same for the neuter?

No! That is an awesome deal. Good for a neuter, amazing for a spay.
For comparison, I look Bugsy and Gandy in. Bugsy for teeth cleaning, Gandy for her spay. I was being one of those annoying people on my cell (precommon texting, and a quick touch-base call), and tried to just hand her my credit card. She kind of ignored it until a hung up, then said eleven ninety-two. Or something else north of a grand. My jaw hit the floor. I was expecting about $200 for spay and $350 for dental.

You're getting an incredible deal, regardless of surgery. The exam alone usually runs around $45. Neuters tend to be cheaper as they're not as involved, but you wouldn't be able to get a neutering, exam, shots and trim for $50.

Wow! That is crazy!
I'm glad it wasn't that much. Yikes!
I wonder why it costs so much. They called me three hours after I dropped them off and said I could get them. So, it's not like it took a long time..

Neutering usually doesn't take that long, in fact it probably takes longer to sedate the animal than it does to actually do the dastardly deed. The 3 hours was probably the amount of time that it took your kitties to come out of the anesthesia.
When I got my last kitten a few months ago (from the animal shelter), he had been neutered earlier that morning. The next day, I took him into my vet to get him checked out and the vet checked to make sure there were no problems from the neutering.

OUCH!
We took the dog and cat to the vet for kenneling while we went away last Thanksgiving. Both animals were kennelled for 10 days and both animals got their teeth cleaned. Total bill was just under $700.
Now, the cleaning we were told it could be anywhere from $150-300 each, depending on what the vet found once he had the animals sedated long enough to be able to do a good dental exam. He told us that if either had a bad tooth, they'd have to sedate them further in order to pull the tooth and it would cost more. We lucked out in that it wound up being only $150 each to clean their teeth.
