Looking at my runs in Garmin Connect over the past few months, if I exclude races and bricked runs*, my average HR is 144-169. The vast majority are in the mid-high 150s and low 160s. My highest max is 181. Even if I add races back in, 181 is still my highest max.
*Bricked runs and races have higher avg HRs not only because duh, I'm working hard in races, but because those data files don't include warmups or (for races) cool downs that would change the averages.
I thought of this after reading the HRM and calories burned thread. My heart rate runs really high when I run, usually in the 170's and 180's. It is higher when I am going uphill and when it is hot. I have gotten it up to 201 before.
I am not fast, probably a 11 min 30 sec mile and I usually run 3-3.5 miles right now. I am 140, 5'4, and 35. My resting heart rate is pretty normal, in the 50 or 60's I think.
You should slow down and build that zone 2 endurance. if you can lower your heart rate your runs will be much more fun. Who cares what the pace is , that will come.
Easy/Recovery Runs - mid/low 140s Long Runs - mid 150s Speed work - 160ish (if I push myself, but I have a hard time pushing that hard in my tempo/ race pace miles. I need to focus on that)
I stopped wearing my HR monitor on races, but the last race I wore in in I averaged 175.
I agree with joenali, I'd try and slow down. If you mix up the effort level it will help your training.
You can probably get your hr down that low if you slow down. Before you know it, you will be running faster with the same heart rate. You will become more fit as you keep running.
My usual runs are in the high 160s/low 170s; races are more in the mid-high 170s.
I'm 34, I think the math says I "should" be at 185. Even after a race, I feel like I have something left, but during the race I don't really feel like I can push harder. Or really, I feel like if I push harder i will just run out of steam before the race ends.
So far on the bike I average in the low 160s, but I think that's partially because traffic makes it hard to go fast for a long period of time.
In short, IDK WTF to think of my pulse when exercising.

So mine is usually 130-140....maybe I need to be working harder....thanks for asking about this...I was curious too how high others HR are while running
If I'm really trying to keep it easy I can run in the 130's - 140's. During speed work it gets 175+. This winter I did a set of repeats on the treadmill trying to find my max, and I held pretty steady at 198-199 during the last one. That hurt!
Basically, fitness effects HR a lot, but people also have a lot of natural differences. Age, gender, heart size, genetics, all play a factor in your HR max and what a normal range is for you in each zone. I used to know more about HR training, but I'm sure others that are more knowledgable could chime in here.
Overall, it's good to do several easier runs per week trying to run at maybe 60-65% max and then some speed work where you get over 75%, maybe up to 80-85% on repeats. Everyone is not the same, so if you do more research on this you'll find some good tips/guidelines. GL!
