this thread taught me people need to get rid of or not drive with dogs.
We got a minivan for our dogs (well them and the kiddo, but we knew we couldnt really fit the dogs with a carseat). We had a small SUV too and we sold it and got our minivan.
But then again, we also bought our house for our golden (one story for his bad hips!) and our lab (half acre! lots of running room! fence installed the day after we moved in!) so we may not be the best judge of what people should or should not do with/for their dogs. LOL.
In all seriousness though, as a driver in my minivan I sit lower to the ground than in most SUVs (this is just based on personal experience though) so I lose that sight/height advantage lasagnasshole and I were discussing above. I also think the clearance from the ground is what makes minivans safer for other people (other drivers, pedestrians, etc) like asdfjkl was talking about.

It's not just the ground clearance, as asdfjkl mentioned. It's about the hood angle. Someone hit by a minivan is more likely to be thrown ONTO the hood while someone hit by an SUV/crossover is more likely to be thrown under the vehicle.
We just took the hard top off our Rubicon for the first time in years and now I'm trying to find any excuse to have to drive that car for the day (it's DW's car, I get the mom-mobile aka crossover :-p ).
I saw an accident on the way home last night between 2 SUV's. The SUV that did the rear-ending was brand spanking new (still had paper plates) and the front bumper had completely fallen off.
Just for reference, the speed limit on that street is 35 mph.
Wait? Are people who drive around in mini vans actually lecturing people who drive in crossovers?
Lololololol.
Okay then.
I'm not lecturing anyone :-) You are very defensive of your vehicle!!
But I do think the stats are out there that minivans are significantly safer than SUVs, but I don't know them off the top of my head.
No my ride has nothing to do with this. It's just hilarious to me that people in minivans (or even people in wagons) are passing judgment on crossovers.
If you visit me, I'll take you on a ride in mine. It's not a newer model, but driving with the top & doors off is amazing.
i had a 2000 wrangler and i LOVED my behbeh. H fucking hated it and was superduperpsyched when i got k/u and we dumped it. to be fair, the transmission was going so it wasn't the worst move ever, but i still have a sad about it.
i cannot fucking WAIT until my kids are out so i can get one. even if ben proves to be a homebody i'll still be able to cram his ass in the back.

sorrynotsorry.
I had a '97 Wrangler and also loved it. Had the longest throw evaaaar, no a/c, got terrible gas milage (but it was 1997 and gas was under $1/gallon so who cares??), but I did love that thing.

Does your opinion of crossovers change at all when they get good gas mileage and come with pedestrian and cyclist specific safety features, like the Volvo XC60? This is currently my favorite car to replace our old Accord when it eventually dies. I actually thought of this board when I read about this option. In particular, it made me think of @mx and asdfjkl www.volvocars.com/uk/explore/pages/innovation-areas.aspx#IntelliSafe
Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake
The groundbreaking Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake, detects and automatically brakes for cyclists swerving out in front of the car.
The new functionality is an enhancement of the present detection and auto brake technology. All cars equipped with pedestrian detection will also incorporate cyclist detection.
The advanced sensor system scans the area ahead. If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car, as it approaches from behind, it will prompt you to act with a flashing warning light on the windscreen, along with an audible alarm. If you don’t react to the warning and a collision is imminent, the car immediately brakes with full braking force.

This whole thread is bizarre.
Are you new here??? lol. my love of minivans is WELL known on here. I even posted a thread with a picture when I got one :-)

I don't understand why you keep thinking this is all about you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because I'm the biggest defender of minivans on this board ;-)
I don't care if people drive minivans or defend them! I do care that people in minivans think everyone else should drive them or when they sneer at people in other types of cars. Minivans are tanks and have poor MPG! They are not for me, but that's cool you love them!

I don't know if you are being TIC, but this is funny so I will take it that way.

This makes no sense.
Your whole exchange here...it is funny/odd/I don't know, but it is making me laugh as it is a bit absurd. Have fun with this...no one is being quite as serious.
Here is a quote from the aforementioned article: Excellent IIHS crash ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the Subaru Forester and given it top 'good' scores in all test categories—including small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and the seat-based rear-impact test. The insurance-industry funded safety group has also Subaru's EyeSight accident-avoidance technologies, as included in our Forester XT, as 'superior.'
That all adds up to a Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2014—among just 22 vehicles in all that have achieved the new accolade so far. Two other Subaru models (Legacy and Outback) have been named Top Safety Pick+, while two others (Impreza and XV Crosstrek) have been given the Top Safety Pick nod.
