Baby toys are kind of terrible. We have the "equipment" - a bouncey chair, then a jumperoo. Other than that, she mostly gets whatever isn't a choking hazard from her brother. Mega blocks are great. Stacking cups. Tupperware. Spoons, both wooden and metal. Balls.
playmat, winkle, mr. whozits, activity triangle, play table, mega blocks, and some soft blocks. I think that set of toys would be good for the first 9 months to year. After that I'd consider my kid's personality a bit. My son is very different from my daughter. From 9 months to 18 months he really only played with toys that either had a door (OMG loved loved loved doors) or had wheels. My daughter on the other hand played with pretty much any toy.

Ugh, I am in the same position. I got rid if all DS's toys, didn't have a baby shower this time, and totally don't know what we should get to entertain her.

The only real "baby" toys I found useful were a couple of teething toys, bright coloured board books, something crinkly, and something interesting to hang off the bucketseat handle. Otherwise pretty much all household items that aren't choking hazards kept Ds's attention better than a lot of his toys. For equipment, I'd want a playmat (kick n play piano!) and containment device (jumperoo and/or exersaucer).

I'm really surprised by these answers. DS is 6 mo and has played with toys since at least 3 months and before that he enjoyed having the toys on his play mat swapped out regularly. He likes the oball rattle, o ball flexiloops, the bright starts plastic balls with the different things inside, sophie, and several plush toys that squeak, crinkled etc. He definitely enjoys toys.

It's not that my baby didn't like toys, it is that I can now better appreciate things that will have a long life span.
For example, DS has played with the same can of tennis balls and kitchen measuring cups for 10+ months now. Simple stuff like that seems to grow with them over time.
