A little over a week ago we started Ferber for bed time and it has been going wonderfully (knock on wood). We don't have night time wake ups, but he was having trouble going to sleep at night and had gotten to the point where he wanted to only sleep next to me. He now puts himself to sleep in the pnp within 20 minutes or so, with minimal fussing/whining.
The book says to do the same thing at nap time, but it has not yet worked during the day. Whether I put him down asleep or drowsy, he will sleep for 30/45 minutes and then wake up (cranky- still needing sleep), without fail. I've tried letting him cry and checking in, but it seems like he just gets himself SO worked up and then cannot settle back to sleep.
Any ideas? Why would this work at night but not day? I still do the same bed time routine and the room is no darker at night than nap time...

@vicmo do you think I should just pick him up when he wakes up even if he is still cranky? I guess he would just have a couple more shorter afternoon naps instead of a longer one..
Eta- in cases (like now, lol) that I let him sleep on me, or in bed next to me, he will nap for a couple of hours straight and not wake up after 30-45 minutes. So he is definitely capable of one longer nap with no wake ups, but apparently not without my assistance/presence.

pierogigirl @vicmo thanks! It will definitely make my afternoons less stressful not fighting him to sleep. Of course I will also be less productive if I have him around, or wear him more. Lol.

Perhaps..it wont take months since you ST earlier.
Around six months I got tired of holding LO for her naps so every few days I would try out the crib (we were still nursing to sleep at that point) one day it just worked. And she started to nap in her crib for longer periods.
Also when you get to a 2-3-4 schedule naps get easier and even more so when it is just one.
Yeah, daytime Ferber never worked for us, though it worked like a charm at 5 months at night. At around 8 months, we started putting DD down on her belly at nap time. We would gently hold her down while patting/rubbing her back and shushing her. It would take a few minutes for her to fall asleep, but she would take pretty good naps after that. Then around 10 months we went cold turkey CIO with no checks. I think it took one or two naps.

This was our experience with naps too, I think AJ was around 5.5 months.
