We moved to a sleeping bag and pillow on the floor. Our kids were a bit older, though. Our kids were a bit older than your DS when they climbed out, though. Lots of people recommended this to me, we just never got around to getting one.
We have the toddler air mattress with the "bumpers" but I'm not sure I would buy it again. He used the PNP until over 2 and since we've been camping he'll sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag.

Do you put the rail on the pnp? Or have to have a separate bed?

We use the rail on a regular bed. We originally bought it when transitioning DD to a twin. It's adjustable and easy to throw in the van when we're traveling. If we were flying, I'd probably just put DS1 in a bed against the wall and sleep next to him. In our case, it has been a relatively short window where they need something before they're okay to just sleep in a regular bed. I personally wouldn't buy a specific air mattress or anything unless this situation was coming up a lot in the next few months. DS1 sleeps on a crib mattress on the floor at my inlaws and that works well too.
When we visit family we just do a twin mattress on the floor. In a hotel we get two doubles or queens and he gets one, with pillows turned sideways so he doesn't roll off.
At that point I just did a bed too..mainly because I was tired of packing so much sh*t. Worked for us mainly because DD actually does better in a bed than anywhere else. She hated a pack n play and wouldn't sleep in a hotel crib she didn't "recognize" at all.
I have some friends who would use a little kid tent on the floor. The kid though it was great fun to camp inside on the floor, and he couldn't work the zippers so he was contained as well.
Thanks. We'll have to try him in something before we travel again. Didn't think I'd need to buy bed rails this early! He is determined to get out of that thing, so we have to find an alternative.
We have this for our 2.5 year old. I don't know that I'd use it with a kid under 2 mainly bc my kid would have climbed out in an instant and been gone. She wouldn't understand having to stay in it
I'm using the recaro toddler cot and it works great although the padding is negligible. I put a blanket under my son for extra padding and he sleeps comfortably
