That? Is supposed to be a grey and maroon frosted cake (I know, I KNOW. Terrible color combo) It turned out bright pink and the grey is horrid, just horrid. This was a one layer test run cake and I cannot stop laughing at myself. Did I REALLY think I would get a good looking grey or ever achieve maroon? I was irritated with myself, so I just started filling in the cake with a star tip. It is also supposed to be tiger striped on the inside but it all ran together. Fail. Oh and to add insult to injury my swiss buttercream was just the faintest bit gritty and kept melting since it is a billion degrees in the kitchen.
I think I am just going to go ahead with my original idea and make a 3 layer cake with a tiger paw on the top.
(This is for something social/fun, not like anything super important that anyone requested)
I think cupcake girl could do better at this point.

This year my son wanted a zebra birthday cake. After trying the from-scratch recipe (didn't work) I bought a Duff zebra cake mix box at Target for a couple of bucks. IT WORKED! Within the box is 2 packets of cake mix (one white, one chocolate) and maybe you could tint the white one with some orange?
Anyhow, ignore the ugly cake I made (this was a second layer that was floppy looking, and last-second salvage, basically) but if you can look past that and the blurry photo, it did turn out striped.
The only trick is to put a small amount in the pan and let it spread out on its own. When it has spread out then you add the other color on top and let that spread out on its own, repeat-repeat-repeat. The directions are all on the box. Maybe an option for you?Attachment Deleted

First things first: that cake looks great. I'd eat it. Heck, I'd take a photo of it and put it in my album of baking successes! That said, I can't really see the grey, I don't think. Am I seeing grey frosting underneath maroon rosettes? Also, I'm wondering how you made grey frosting. Can you share with the class, please?
I made a white cake mix, split it, and colored one orange and doctored the other into a chocolate cake. I used the method of adding orange and letting it spread, add chocolate, add orange, etc. And unless I didn't do it right (which is 100% possible), it just ended up looking like a sad mess inside. lol.

There is some grey at the top corners. I had started covering it up with pink until I ran out of frosting.
I bought black gel color (any craft store that sells Wilton products has them) and dipped a toothpick into it and then into the frosting and mixed up.

Black food coloring! Duh! I only think of food coloring coming in red, green, blue and yellow!
Wilton has a ton, a TON, of gel colors. And a tiny amount goes a long way.
I remember growing up my Mom wouldn't let me touch her gel colors and I desperately wanted to. It was like freakin' Christmas the day she was all "ok Bob, you can use my gel colors, you're old enough now". She had an entire tub full.
I can never achieve a good grey for some reason. I barely allow myself to play with the gel colors. I always stain the shit out of my fingers regardless of how careful I am.

Hi, Bob,
With both the from-scratch zebra cake I made (that didn't turn out) and the Duff cake mix one they both called for some of the batter to have less liquid (I think the white cake had something like 1/4 cup less liquid or some such...can't remember it...kid's birthday was in March).
Also I think I would use gel drops to color mine (he wants a jungle-animal theme for the next birthday so I will probably be making a tiger cake) because I have read before on baking sites that even just a touch extra liquid (a few drops of food coloring) can change things so I guess gel can be better for not making the batter runnier?
You have inspired me, Bob, though. I need to not be putzy and instead go and get a Duff cake mix and see if I can make a tiger cake. I tend to leave that stuff till the last minute.
Also I am curious about the link from pagas. Bob, if you find tiger cake perfection let me know!

I also thought of Steel Magnolias with that color combo!
Last year, I made DS1 a Star Wars cake for his birthday. I wanted the frosting to be really dark blue, so that I could put stars on it to look like space. Somehow my combo of black and dark blue gel colors made the frosting a really gross-looking army green. (?!) I tried to pretend it was supposed to be Yoda-colored, but really it was a huge fail. Luckily, we weren't having a big party...just immediate family, so it wasn't a big deal. And DS was really sweet about it and kept telling me he loved his Yoda cake!
