I think it will look great. I bet the scratches won't be a problem either. I once refinished a dresser that had some big scratches, gouges almost and after sanding and getting stain on you can't tell. You can feel them if you run your hand over the area, but you really cant see it.

I wouldn't try to sand them out...they are part of its' history and part of its' charm.
I used a wood filler to fill in some scratches then sanded it smooth and you couldn't tell they were ever there. But it was on the back of a master bedroom door so I really didn't see the charm in a dog being locked in there and trying to claw its way out
