We headed up to Barclay Lake yesterday morning for the kids first backpacking trip (DD is 6, DS is 3.5). It was about 2 miles in and they did amazingly well. No complaints, DD led the way the whole time, and DS this morning said he loves sleeping in a tent. Thought I'd be an AW and share some photos, but if anyone is looking for an easy place to hike in to camp this is a great spot!
Here we are - ready to go!
DD insisted on carrying her own pack, and was upset that we didn't load it up enough for her. She ended up carrying our stove, her water bottle, her giraffe pillow pet, and chapstick. We also made one of our dogs carry the dog food. He's 10.5 and has the energy level of a 2 year old. We have to even the playing field as much as we can.
The kids enjoying the setup, and DH and DS at our tent, with Mt. Baring in the background. I guess people BASE jump off of it, but we didn't see anyone yesterday.
Most of the sites are right on the lake, which both the kids and dogs loved.

Looks like a lot of fun. That's something I know my husband would like to do. Me, probably not so much since I'm such a baby with the weather, but the boys and the dog would love it for sure.
Your two dogs are handsome - both labs? We have a chocolatey labrador.

They are both lab'ish. We think our black lab is part pointer. And our yellow may be part hound or mastiff of some sort? Although he could also be a full lab? Wish they could tell us!

Looks like they like to retrieve like a typical lab Do you think they are happier as a pair than if you just had one? We talk about getting a friend for Sadie Brown Girl, because sometimes she just seems so pitiful and lonesome although she gets, what I consider, a lot of attention.
Looks like a lot of fun! I'm not so great at that kind of camping...I only car camp where I can bring more stuff. (Plus I have a bad back/neck/knees so I can't carry much if at all on a hike.)

I do think they are happier as a pair. We had our black lab (Tucker) for a little over a year before getting our yellow lab (Hoss) (he started as a foster dog that we fell in love with). They get along great, and this sounds bad but I think Tucker would be fine without Hoss. But if anything happened to Tucker Hoss would be lost.

There are a bunch of "one hundred great day hikes in Washington" books if you're looking for something that's not as intense.

He walked the entire time. At one point he fell and got upset and wanted to be carried, but we told him we couldn't since we had our packs. He accepted that more quickly that I thought and went along the rest of the way without really complaining. Towards the end he kept saying "Is this our camp spot?".
