Coroner stated that the female burglar wasn't pregnant.
ETA: @abc7: #BREAKINGNEWS Female burglar who was shot by 80-year-old homeowner was not pregnant, coroner says abc7.la/Ursm7t
I can't say I'm terribly surprised by this.
Me either, though it changes nothing for me since I'm not bothered that a fleeing pregnant woman got shot, I'm bothered that a fleeing woman was shot in the back twice. I do realize however, that this may change things for others since she's now a proven liar and burglar.
Um. I feel like we are treading dangerously close to blaming the victim, and I'm kind of curious as to why that's about to happen.
Because the only reason she got shot was because she broke into someone's house and robbed and assaulted an old man?
Yes, I do indeed blame her. It's like someone (hbc, I think) said upthread - if you choose to wear all black and walk across the highway in the middle of the night, well, you can't be surprised that you get hit by a car. It's not that the penalty for walking on the highway *should* be death, but you can't exactly be described as an innocent victim when the completely forseeable consequence of your action befalls you.
I'm pretty sure she's referring to the old man as the victim here, which he is, he's the victim of robbery and assault, regardless of whether it's ultimately decided he killed the woman in self defense or not.
Eta: I'm choosing to be precise in my wording lest anyone else think I'm blaming the victim, so I apologize if it sounds like I'm over explaining.

Ohh ok I see. Yes, he is the victim, but at the same time, he did something that is not acceptable under the law, and not acceptable by many people's ethical and moral standards as well.

I agree completely but apparently that means I'm victim blaming. <---- obviously that rankled a bit, lol

I could see how that would rankle a person if they were specifically called out, but since you weren't I might stop taking things so personally.

Well sure you didn't name names specifically, but that comment appeared to be a response to the exchange we just had so I highly doubt I was the only one who thought you were referring to me.
Eta: and truthfully my comment was meant to be TIC; I was poking fun at myself but I suppose I should have used a smilie to make that perfectly clear since apparently the "lol" didn't.

IMO, there are 2 victims and 3 criminals in this story.
It sucks that what these two people did cost one of them their life and caused this 80 yr old man to become a 'criminal'...but I'm sorry, what he did was murder her while she was down, already shot, unarmed, and begging for her life.
The whole scenario sucks all around. But expressing that vigilantism =/= self defense is not necessarily victim blaming. If the man had stopped after gunshot #1 and called the police and everyone was all 'Lock him up and throw away the key!!!' then I could see where that could be construed as victim blaming.
