This is what I get for going to bed at a reasonable time, sniff sniff, I miss all the fun.
In the future guys, could you guys have all the crazies show up at say 8pm with the stupidity winding down by say 10:30pm EST? It's no fair that I miss all the fun, just because someone in my house sees fit to start crying at 5:30am most mornings.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

I keep trying to figure out how at add anything, but I don't think throwing out my scientific or engineering credentials will help and trying to encourage this guy to expect more of a 6th grader raised by super-smart scientist parents is also not going to work.
So instead I'll just reply to the statements he said last night.
"I accept that it is MY FAULT that you don't get what I'm saying because I used big words and most of you have NO FUCKING CLUE what "standards of scholarship" or "professional scientist" mean.
...In fact, try this test: If it seems stupid to you, I'm definitely not saying it, because I'm a LOT brighter than you." (Drknowitall, 2014)
Because as a Scientist, I feel like this is 'assault' on my character...

I've had such a fun time reading through this thread. I know I'm just an outsider gawking at the train wreck but I must say, the responses were superb! I don't know how many other lurkers/gawkers are on here... I started following this story because I found it interesting and noticed there were so many people dishing out comments who hadn't read beyond the first line of the original story and the intrigue that followed.
Just a few points I found out along the way...
1. Lauren did cite Zack's work - she kind of had to. Her whole project revolved around Zack's work specifically. You see, her father, Dr. Albrey Arrington, had funded Zack Jud's research during his graduate program. Zack's former supervisor, Dr. Craig Layman, was listed as principal author on the papers Zack wrote but by and large, it was mostly Zack who spearheaded this and ran with it. As he became more well known in Florida for alerting people to the problem of lionfish coming into the estuaries and rivers, he started giving public lectures on the topic - including where Lauren's dad works (obviously, since he funded the research). Lauren was "hooked" (had to get that in). She did her project and was coached by her father and Zack's supervisor. Zack knew about the project and thought it was "cool" but wasn't directly involved (he was still finishing his PhD).
2. Lauren received attention NOT just because of the science fair project - she didn't even win first place and the media didn't even catch wind of the story till over a year later - Lauren received the attention specifically because her name was on an independent study published in a well-respected scientific journal. What everyone (except Zack Jud) seems to be focused on is whether she plagiarized her science fair project. That really isn't the issue at all. Zack's Facebook post was about what happened after the fact.
The most interesting piece of information that had been ignored ALL this time is that the "independent study published in a well-respected scientific journal" that got her this national acclaim was...(drum roll please)... no other than Zack Jud's paper! (I'm dying laughing over here - well, it's kind of sad so it's a restrained laugh) He thought it would be so "cool" (he seems to say that a lot according to the emails / timeline that has now aired since fishgate went down) to include her in the salinity study he had already planned to do and he wanted to put her name out there. He didn't use her data - because he had previously proved the fish could survive at lower salinity levels... this follow up paper was looking at how long they could survive in the wild at those levels (at least that's the gist I got... I don't know, it's not my field).
3. I don't know why I have this numbered... just go with it. Lauren's school puts out a press release about the fact that she was mentioned in the scientific paper (you know, Jud's paper) and it gets picked up. What seemed to irk Jud is that not only did no one mention the unique case here (Lauren's father was funding lionfish in estuary research led by Zack Jud and it was Zack's paper that actually included Lauren's name), but both Lauren and her father then go on to TV interviews where they explicitly state that "no one knew about lionfish in estuaries" and "hey guys, what about the river" - THIS, this is what Zack was fighting against.
In Zack's plea to family/friends on Facebook, he went on to say that he had contacted her father and tried as delicately as he could, to ask them to correct the error and her father basically said "no one cares about a grad student"... ummm, some of us at least care about honesty.
And finally, where is Zack leading up some diatribe, Mr. Know-I've-Crapped? He made some comments on his own wall on Facebook. All I've seen crapping himself over and over is - well, you (DrKnowItAll). Don't get me wrong, you've been completely entertaining. I sincerely hope to get a nice rebuttal, just because I'm bored at the moment.

Sorry, I don't have any animated gifs or a cool profile pic - hopefully, the 'way too long' post makes up for it and someone will get at least one chuckle. (bashful newbie face)
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
Oh my god it would be the most amazing thing ever if both the dad and Dr. Uncited Hottie showed up in this thread to duke it out with each other "anonymously."

It would - and I sincerely don't know why this interests me so much (well, maybe because I hate it when guys like Lauren's dad stomp on the little guy - and this one seems even more insidious because he's apparently using his daughter as a shield. I don't know who the drknowitall guy is - but I think he's got some sort of vendetta against Zack.
In all honesty, I could have gotten some of this wrong - but it's mostly from the timeline put out there by Zack's supervisor while he was finishing his PhD and from Zack's open Facebook page. There have been a couple of other timelines put out there with copies of the email exchanges too. I don't even remember where I first picked up this story - maybe from someone sharing the original story on my FB feed, I don't know. I'm hooked, though. I've got my grad degree to complete by next spring and I'm down to the last month of a summer hiatus so I guess I had some time to kill on this one (oops, that just killed any cred I could have had on this one, didn't it).

Nah, you're good since you used insidious in a sentence properly.

We call that a WOT (tm). Technically that tm belongs to me. But I'll let you use it if you care fair credit to its originator.
Seriously? LOL! I haven't been on a forum in years.
I still have Facebook but its turned into "Look at this awesome closeup picture of what I'm eating!!! isn't it just AWESOME!!!??" or "look at my totally angelic kids!!! come on, give me a Like on this!! They're perfect in every way" or "<someone you don't know> wants to play candy crush saga with you" and my favorite FB post, "I'm soo perfect and smart, everything I believe is ALWAYS 100% right... why doesn't everybody in the world agree with me!!?? Here are 100 made up quotes with pictures of celebrities that agree with me... so you know I'm right"
I swear, when I first got that account, we had groups and fun exchanges like this one. The collective eye rolling after drKnowsHisCrap came on was epic.

<wistful sigh>
since you haven't mentioned anyone hitting you up to buy weight loss wraps or jamberry i'm going to assume you're a dude?

Yeah, your forum is catching the fame wagon on this one ;-)
laurenpetro - no, I haven't gotten the weight loss wrap posts. I can say I have received the lovely, "enlarge your genitals" messages, but not on FB. My email spam box gets filled with those kinds of messages. Maybe the spambots haven't figured out whether I'm a dude or a gal. I am not sure how to prove that on a message board though - or even if it's relevant.
I can tell you that I'm a female and I have several kids - so I do get hit from family and friends with posts about their awesome kids and fantastic lifestyles. I'm not saying ALL posts about family are bad... just the "I and my awesomely fantastic progeny are much better than you" posts. Maybe that's another underlying reason why this story interests me so much. It's a lesson for parents who think their kids are extensions of themselves (and their unfulfilled dreams) and who use their kids as tropies. This dad got called out on it - and I find the response interesting.

totally not relevant. just an (apparently incorrect) observation.

Lionfish biology is not my personal area of expertise, so I doubt I'll ever run into this guy, but oh man, that would be hilarious. And weird. And hilarious.
After this, I'm glad I don't research lionfish biology. I'd hate to run into Dr. Knowitall at a conference. He seems like he would be able to accurately demonstrate what a "douchebag" is, and that's just not fun at conferences.
