oh and I love that you refer to her as "mother". I know Episcopal churches across the country usually refer to their rectors as mother or father lastname but some will call women rectors by Mother firstname. Either way is cool with me.
I was told that Virginia seems to be a hold out in this area. In the churches here they all refer to their rector by only their first name. In our confirmation classes I referred to our rector as Father lastname and people practically shit themselves. "That is soooo Catholic. We don't do that."
They said that states north of us and south of us will say Father or Mother. But Virginia is considered low country Episcopal and they just refuse to say Father or Mother. Ridiculous. Give these people the title they deserve. I'm not calling a rector "Bob". I just won't.
Just a side rant because I saw you said Mother, lol.

We call her Mother Firstname. When she arrived, that's what she requested we call her.
I feel bad for rectors here because regardless of what they want, they will be referred to by only their first name. It bugs me.
Other than that, I do love our church. We are supposedly the 6th largest Episcopal church in the US (so I've been told) and I'd never want to have to find a new church. But if we were to lose our rector who is very progressive like we lost our associate rector, I'd be as upset as you. I can't imagine him not being there. You have my sympathies, really.

I come from a big Catholic family and we refer to our own relatives (older generation) like the brothers/sisters and cousins -as "Father so&so, sister so&so."
My dad once called his priest-brother at the rectory and they kept saying "Yes, brother Smith, we'll give him the message." And my dad was all, "No, I am HIS brother, not a brother."
