My husband and I just bought a brand new home out in the country. I know I want to do some really neat things in this room, but I'm "decorating challenged."
We talked about doing some neat moulding in the room....ceiling or walls. I'm afraid that our limited experience might involve us making some decisions we'll question later. SO I'm coming to the experts.
If this was a living room in your house, what kinds of things would you like to see or NOT see in terms of moulding? Feel free to tell me to leave it as is if moulding would be a bad idea.
I'm not sure how to describe our style....so I'm really just looking for inspiration. ANY ideas/suggestions are welcome.
DH also brought up the idea of having something on the ceiling. I can't think of the name of it, but it's like a "medallion" or something around where the ceiling fan us connected.
Hm, I would start by replacing all that small molding around the doors and windows with something more custom and beefy, but that would have to probably be carried through the house and would be expensive and wasteful since the small stuff is already in. Maybe some white board and batten around the room at a tall height if you want something else? It would make all those outlets blend in more if you had white moldings up the wall. I don't think I'd do a crown or anything with those sloping ceilings.
You can wrap existing molding w/back band molding to enhance the profile.
It's hard to say without knowing the room's function. Will it be a dining room? a family room with a TV? a study? My answers won't be the same for all of those.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in the OP. It's a living room with a TV.
No top moulding, it would look weird with the angular ceiling. Honestly, given that it's going to be a living room with tv, I don't know that I would add any fancy treatments. Do you have a separate living room that will be more formal or just the one.
In that case, I would like some recessed lighting on dimmer switches. That overhead fan/light is not going to light the whole room all that well. Just make sure the cans are far enough away from the fan to avoid the strobe light effect if you are keeping the fan.
If you are ready to commit to a TV location/room orientation, consider wiring for surround sound at the same time as doing the lighting.
I don't know that I'd do much with the molding. TV/family rooms aren't particularly formal rooms.
A lot of the rest, depends a lot on the furniture, etc. that you want to put in there. It's such a blank canvas now.

Yeah, we don't want any crown moulding...I'm referring to something on directly in the middle of the ceiling. I can't think of the name.

The large decorative piece that a light fixture hangs from is called a medallion, you had that right. They come in a lot of styles from very simple with just a few grooves or an outside bead to highly ornate Victorian.
I'm not sure what your personal style is, but given the build of that room, I would go with something simpler and not so ornate.
That room has a lot of drama. I think you need bigger baseboards to balance out the ceiling line. This illustrates scale:
I think you need more weight at the bottom to 'anchor' the walls.
I love this. For the baseboards, they are simply just adding on to them here, right? I think that would be simple enough for us to do.
I think heavier mouldings and trim work all around, as suggested by someone prior, would be a huge improvement. If you google you can see more images and instructions.
treedimensional Yeah, while in Lowe's over the weekend, we opted to not do board and batten in this room, but focus that on the dining room. We have this cool wood feature, my crafty husband made, that will go up one of the walls. We decided that will be enough in this room.
BUT I do think all the discussion above of beefing up the existing trim is a better option for us. We've put in baseboards before so I think this will be much easier just adding on to it. I know DH will be up for it.
