Dh does. He handles this bill and I was using his phone and a text message comes in that he is over his text limit for the month. Come to find out this is happening regularly to the tune of $15 to $20 per month. Bc he has a grandfather plan they won't change his texts without changing the data plan. He doesn't want to though he regularly only uses half a gig a month. They offered us unlimited talk and text and 1GB data for 50 a month plus tax...he still doesn't want to do it. Any suggestions? He ran out of texts yesterday and is already over by $10 (texting family about his sister's wedding) . We can't block incoming texts without an additional $5 fee on the line.
Before iMessage and before everyone I knew had iPhones, I used to use one of the free texting apps. I can't even remember the name of it now, but there are several of them out there.

Get rid of the unlimited data. I just did. My husband went over the 3gb max in the unlimited and his data was slooooowed down. We share 10gb of data, have unlimited text and voice for like $60 less a month and there is no slow down on the data speed now. I held onto my unlimited for way too long.

We did have unlimited text previous, but the data change works for us because we use wifi at home and usually don't have super high data usage which is surprising. What's the point of having unlimited data if they slow it down? Even if we go over, the next level up is still cheaper than the two unlimited data plans we were paying for

We have grandfathered unlimited data but only 200 texts each. We rarely go over and when we do it's only $1 or so.
We use beejive and chat on google chat through that on our phones with each other. Also I don't pay for texts to other iPhones because they are on iMessage.

I did and I didn't want to lose it despite never using much data. I was forced to give it up when we moved and AT&T was no longer a service provider option.
As a side note, cell plans are sooo much cheaper in the UK.
I would try to find a free text app if he is over by that much. But, if hes not using the data, why hold on to the unlimited data?
I have unlimited data and we may give it up at some point in the near future but not right now; I use it to stream music a lot especially at work so I often go over the 3 GB limit. They haven't throttled me yet but they keep threatening too, LOL (I think its because I will use 5 gb in a month, and then very little for two months, etc). but if I were only using a half GB of data a month, I'd definitely lose the unlimited.

We've been able to add unlimited texting for a month (when DH goes to his Nerd Conference and sends like 2000 texts in 5 days) and take it off again without affecting our grandfathered data plan. Maybe just call and ask about adding for a month, and don't cancel it? I wonder if it depends on who you call -- like a "add a service" person versus a "change your plan" person.

We have the same setup, and I don't know why it didn't occur to me to use google chat to text H.
Occasionally, we have months where we go over. But unlimited text plans are $20, not $5 like our current set up. So even at a $5 or $7 over-charge, we are still saving money.

I have a friend who was just posting on facebook about how he switched to these new AT&T family share plans. I looked it up and its $130 to share unlimited talk, text & data with two phones (smart phones). However, my bill with taxes now is only $132 so I think switching would still be more expensive, plus we would give up unlimited. I accept that "unlimited" basically means 5 GB each because AT&T will throttle you after that. But I don't see why I should switch to those plans when it is going to cost me more.

You can always use the WhatsApp app (I think that's what it's called?) to text free, although I haven't done it.
ATT would throttle me at 3 GB when I had unlimited. It was so effing annoying.
I did give up my grandfathered data when I went to Verizon because I have a corporate discount with them. I only have 3 GB but I'm mostly on wifi all day so I don't even use 3 GB anymore.

My understanding is that it was 3 GB and has now gone up.
I can't be on wifi at work - it blocks all social media.
