One of the things I love most about Madison is how much you can do for free. Farmer's market, union terrace, capitol square, state street, henry vilas zoo, the lakes. And nothing beats Badger football game days.
As for the rest of the state, there are plenty of fun and interesting things to do here, even in the winter.
The people are generally friendly and laid-back. You will find liberals and conservatives everywhere. You certainly won't be run out of town no matter where you end up.

This is awesome, guys. Thanks.
Like I said, VERY PRELIMINARY stuff here, but we're intrigued.
puddleofgrace - Would be awesome to meet you too! One of my very best friends is from Minnesota and I loved my brief visit to the northern part of the state for her wedding so I would not object at all to getting to come back for another visit.
We've been to Wisconsin, too, and dug it. Plus, H is a Midwestern boy himself with tons of family in Illinois, so we're not without roots there.
I live in a tiny town in central Wisconsin (closest big city is Stevens Point). Only 460 people. It was a culture shock when I first moved here from a Chicago suburb. It took some time to get used to. Now I can't go back. The slower pace of life, not having the feeling of having to keep up with the Jones' and feeling accepted by everyone is great. I stay away from the political side of things, so that is never an issue. Good luck in your journey!

LOL.
I am vocal about my political opinions. I cannot contain myself on certain issues. But I try to be polite about it. (I wouldn't tear down anybody's Scott Walker posters, but I might cross the street and make the sign against the evil eye when passing them.)
