Packie is the package store. It's where booze is sold but not beer (at least not in CT).
In PA they're called "state stores" because the state runs them. In Virginia they're the VABC. I can tell you all the names for all the places I've lived. Priorities!
But what are nips?!
Thanks for the packie explanation though, that helps. Still prefer living in CA where you can buy booze at a variety of different types of establishments. Lol.

Booze but not beer? Whaa?
I'm so confused.
Haha booze meaning liquor and alcohol.
I honestly don't remember if CT has beer in packies. I moved out before I could drink. I know in VA and PA the state run stores only have wine and liquor. In PA beer comes exclusively in cases from giant warehouses run by private parties. Or you can get 6 packs at some restaurants. Apparently the way PA decided to cut down on alcohol abuse was to make it too confusing for drunk people to figure out where to buy the drink they wanted.

Those little mini bottles of booze at the register, that are meant to get you through the walk back to your car.
I hope this thread gets run over by a hipster on a damn penny farthing while carrying a smith corona electra 120 and wearing his great-grandmother's mink stole. Good lord.

How confusing. We can buy beer, liquor, and wine in liquor stores. That's all I know.
Yes, CT now has beer in "packies". And I call it a liquor store like a normal person.
I do miss being able to buy beer at a gas station or pretty much anywhere. At least they sell beer on Sundays now, that was a thing for a long time. A really stupid thing.
I've also had cream sodas, which are soda, flavored syrup (vanilla, almond, what have you), and half and half. No need to request it over ice, it just comes that way. Omg yum, I could use one of these.

Some of the groceries have added small restaurants with beer areas to you can buy your two six packs. There was even something about certain Sheetz maybe getting approval for similar options.

I love living in London where you can go to the grocers and pick up anything you want. And I go to the local Gelateria as we don't have an ice cream shop nearby. Mmmm...Italiano.

I always heard my parents call it a package store when I lived there. Packies just seems to be the accepted lingo of the thread.
I remember those big curtains with the smiley faces that said "NO BEER ON SUNDAYS" that they would pull down on the beer fridges. Blue laws were funny in their own way.

The Virginia one is dangerously close to VBAC.
Uh, no. They're just ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) stores. It's just a liquor store. And yes, they are regulated/owned by the state.

Sheetz but not Wawa? Sheetz doesn't exist in my area of PA (or at least I don't care to find it). If I can buy beer at Wawa instead of having to stop at Wegman's my life will be complete.

I'm not originally from CT, maybe people do still call it a package store? And yeah, I hated those smiley face things. Let's be honest and make it a frown, amirite?
Anyway W.T.Faulkner, you have my sympathies. I think I know what neighborhood you moved into, and all I can say with regards to the hipsters is godspeed. Godspeed.
I was the first response in this thread. Came back 20 minutes later and it's 7 pages long. I was like "wtf is going on in here!" Read through page 2 and I think I get it now.

Could you explain it to me, then?
Well, I haven't read pages 3-7, but I'm assuming this is just a massive thread about the regional terms of milkshakes. Thanks to @savestheday. People get up in arms about regional language.
eta: I could totally be talking out my ass here. But I at least understand why the first couple of pages started up.
