-We went to the the recently opened Trader's Joe's on Saturday. As much as we have missed shopping there for the past year +, it has been crazy busy so we waited until we were in the area for something else and gave it a go. We found a parking space right off, so it must have been meant to be. Right?
It was all so familiar to me that it made me feel homesick. Well, not exactly homesick...more like the store itself made me feel like I was home. It made me realize that FL is still very foreign to me. It was very weird...a little unsettling.
-I have an old painted cabinet. The cabinet is mid century, black, and the door has a flowered design painted on it. It isn't in the best condition, with some scratches and a little chipping...and the paint was dull. I had tried to clean it but wasn't sure what use, and nothing helped.
I bought some of the Dutch Glow, Amish Wood Milk at Target, and used it on it, and it actually worked. It really cleaned it well, and it is shiny and looks nice. I was about to move it out of the living room and into the guest room, but it may have gotten a reprieve. It looks pretty nice now.
-Therma Tru has a new line of doors called Pulse, that are more modern/mid century modern, and as long as you don't need a size other than 32" or 36", they are not priced as crazily as Crestview doors. Maybe not the same quality as Crestview, but seems like a good alternative. I am annoyed with our county though..they require permits for doors. The doors I want have a glass inset, and I am afraid that with all of the windows on my house they won't let me have them. I am considering waiting until after we get our fence done and not going through the permit process. Shocking, but true. ;p
- We had a large pine tree and two much smaller (but dead) trees removed from our backyard on Friday. There was much discussion about the pine since we've lived here (neighbors, workers, tree guy-everyone has an opinion about pines), but everyone (DH, tree guy and I), agreed that it was now or never (never being not until it fell on someones house), and since there will no longer be access once our new fence is up, this seemed like the best time.
It hadn't occured to me how weirdly dark our bedroom was before, but today I didn't need a light to see in my bedroom. It was so dark before that I needed to use the overhead light to do anything in there, no matter what time of day. It isn't bright, since there are still a lot of tall trees back there but now there is enough light in the backyard that it makes me feel like maybe we will be able to plant a bit more of a garden than we thought. We had been wanting to plant a few fruit trees in the side yard, but were concerned about the lack of space and lack of light towards the back part of the yard.
- Oh...and we have some kind of invasive, non native frogs taking over our yard. A female can lay 15,000 eggs in one season/year/whatever. DH has accidentally stepped on a couple of the teeny guys, and four or five of the adult frogs have taken residence in the eaves of our porch. One likes to spend the afternoon in a knot hole.
I read up on them and the expert said to humanely euthanize them. He thinks that we should don gloves, pick up a frog and place a line of benzocaine on its back, place it in a plastic bag and wait for it become anesthetized, seal the bag and put it in the freezer overnight. Then throw it in the trash. Rinse, repeat 100,000 times. And wash your hands even though you wore gloves because they secrete something that humans are allergic to. Blech.

TBM your randoms are great reading. My random is that every time I have a looming and dreaded paperwork deadline, one of my procrastination proclivities is compulsive house cleaning. I have not scheduled any clients this week so I could get this awful paperwork done. Well, I only got a little paperwork done. My nerves are shot, but I got a LOT of household cleaning and organizing projects done today.
I have nothing h&g related to add. We've been traveling every weekend to introduce the baby to family. So you'll have to accept this PIP AW instead:
What a looker! And the baby chub. Love it!
TBM- I had a similar feeling this weekend at my parents. The sky there is just SO big and beautiful. The stars at night got my all choked up. So clear and bright. Amazing to think I grew up like that and never realized how incredible it is. I think that's honestly a thing I never knew that bugged me about Asheville. The mountains just made me feel so closed in. Whenever I get to the plains, I feel my whole body relax. (Funny because my BFF grew up in the mtns of WV and said the plains made her feel really vulnerable.)

I may be a monster, but I would just step on them.

I am too squeamish to do that...maybe because I am usually barefoot or in flip flops.lol
I did read that someone found out that the Spectracide wasp and hornet killer works on the frogs so DH wants to try that, since he just got some to take care of the hornets that were trying to take over the eaves on the other side of the porch.
That baby is one good looking little guy. Thanks for posting his picture...feel free to anytime.

I miss the mountains. I grew up in Tucson, then lived in SoCal where we had beach and mountains.
I am getting used to the trees, but the flatness is just weird. The clerk at Trader Joe's said that some of their staff relocated from CA, and they all miss the mountains too.

I wish you would come procrastinate at my house. ;p

See I liked Tucson because it still felt open. All flat until you get to the mountains. I actually just found an old map my DH has of Mt. Lemmon
You are in FL right? Job relocation?
I guess it's the tree & mountain combo. We'd go hiking or driving in the NC mountains and I always thought to myself. Well 95% of the time, you can see anything through the trees anyway!

Yes, DH's company relocated his dept to FL.
It is more open in AZ. And you can see the sunsets. Here we can't see the forest for the trees. ;p
Somewhere at my mom's house is the guestbook from the original Mt. Lemmon Lodge. My father's aunt was married to a forest ranger who helped build it. I come from a pioneer family (been there since the conquistadors), so their names are all over Tucson/So AZ history.
My employer has decided to shut off water in my building to finish a bathroom remodel they started in May. That's fine and dandy, but rather than making accommodations for us (moving us to a different building, providing nasty port-a-potties, or something), they just tell us and make us come to the conclusion that we'll have to make our own accommodations by crossing the street to go in a different building. That's fine and dandy too except, hello? Some of us have issues that will make this very difficult, perhaps unreasonably difficult. Whatever. I'm gone 8/15. Gone.
ETA: I should add that they only plan to do this on Friday and not for a full week as they had originally planned until people complained. It's still ridiculous, though. Maybe I'm just extra sensitive about it because 1) I have GI issues, and 2) this has been a crap week.

So, our Portland trip is out and now I'm deciding between a relaxing/scenic hotel stay or a fun/scenic road trip. I'm leaning hard towards the road trip.

I am so sorry. Even though it is just for Fridays, the added stress is not going to help the situation, or your week.
Because I can, I will send a zombie hug. (hug) (hug2)

Random and totally not related to DIY....I made the best scallop skewers last night - the leftovers are my lunch today. So much better than the usual boringass turkey sandwich!!!
This house build is going to be the death of me or the death of DH. DH is seriously about to lose his ever loving mind. He's freaking out over just about every detail. So much so that we've got an emergency design center meeting with our design consultant at 2:00. Thank goodness bossman is on vacation this week so I can go. This week's freakout is brought to you by DH's previous plan of going 17x17 diagonal throughout the house and then going 13x13 straight in the bathroom, laundry room, powder room and master bath. Now he's flipped back to wanting 17x17 in diagonal throughout and then we'll do straight on the shower and tub surround with the decorative tile band, niche and tub top.
My kitchen is open into the hallway that leads to the half bath and office.
I want to paint the wall in my kitchen and the soffit above the cabinets a blue grey (thinking BM's glass slipper or brittany blue). However, I don't want to paint my hallway that. I would paint my hallway the Behr offbeat that I used in upstairs hallway, etc. Would that look weird? They don't even share a border, there is an opening from the DR and then left is the hallway and right is the kitchen.
I think those colors could be nice in adjacent spaces.

Thanks.
I need to just DO IT and be done with it.
Also, thoughts on a way of covering our UUUGGGLY kitchen floor for cheap that doesn't involve adding another layer of peel and stick tile? Someone suggested a jute or natural fiber rug, which I like the idea of. Thoughts?
I don't like rugs in kitchens, because they seem too hard to keep clean.
You are planning a remodel in a couple of years, right? I would be tempted to try something like floor/porch paint. It probably wouldn't hold up for a significant amount of time, but might for a couple of years, and in the meantime would look better than what you have now.
Btw, we rented a condo for many years, and I am not sure which, but either ours or our next door neighbors had the same ugly tile. lol
