This is a kind of ridiculous question for me to ask, considering I was born and raised in Massachusetts. I have a good friend and his girlfriend coming in from DC to visit at the end of August. They're flying in at noon on a Thursday and leaving at noon-ish on Sunday.
I am trying to think of things to do with them that don't suck. They're not very interested in landmarks or anything like that, so I am going to say duck boat tour is out. I took both Thursday and Friday off, so pretty much those days are completely open.
Right now things that are definite are: Sox game on Saturday afternoon (1:35 start time) and likely stay around the city afterward, and Friday night we're having a 'Spain' reunion at a restaurant in Brookline (a bunch of the study abroad peeps that live in the area are getting together for dinner to celebrate our 10 year reunion).
We're trying to avoid restaurants that are $$$$, as they don't have a ton of money and we'll likely be spending a lot on dinner on Friday night. I figure I'll pick them up at the airport on Thursday afternoon and go somewhere for lunch (?) and then do something else in the city. We'll probably trek back to my house (about 40 minutes away) and swim/BBQ and then maybe head back into the city later on that night.
Hmm, here are some ideas edited from my usual list:
Newbury Street (shopping/lunch/people-watching) – You could also walk through the Public Gardens from here.
Sam Adams or Harpoon Brewery tours – self-explanatory
Museum of Science OMNI theater - You could see what's playing at the OMNI. I think the domed theater is pretty cool.
Whale Watch Tour – You can leave from the Aquarium downtown or go up to the one in Gloucester and check out that whole area, including Rockport.
HarvardSquare – Campus is pretty and Harvard Square is fun to walk around or grab a bite to eat.
I was definitely thinking some brewery tours. We actually had a work outing last week and went to Down East Cider, Harpoon, and Nightshift (if you want to add those to your lists). I am definitely taking them to Nightshift and maybe Trillium (they're very, very small). We'll hit up public gardens. Gloucester is a good idea in general!
