Absolutely find out if you have to pay back any and all medical expenses. My company explained to me when I was applying for STD/ML that if I didn't come back to work for 30 days after my leave was up, I had to pay back STD AND all insurance monies that were paid for my care during pg and delivery. I didn't see it anywhere in a handbook, but it was explained in my paperwork for leave. I had no plans of leaving, but I remember this sticking out to me.
Yes, I would say since you were not told until the last second whether or not you would get your full year (I'm sorry you didn't and they were such assholes about it!), you want to see everything in writing about how your maternity leave and coverage will be handled.
Then I would quit at the most advantageous time for me. They have not cared about your interests - or their students' - one little bit.
Normally I hate when women screw over their employers by saying they will come back just to get ML benefits, then quit. But dude, they screwed you. I would have no qualms doing that on this scenario.
