If you connected through Facebook when you set up your account, you can search and see which of your FB friends are on instagram. The majority of my followers/following are Facebook friends, family and peeps from here.
I am going to closely follow this thread, because, as I posted last night, I discovered that I have an Instagram account I set up several years ago and was wondering how to do it. I'm sad that no one follows me on Pinterest, either. WHY don't people LIKE MEEEEE???

You need to up your curating game!
I have a boatload of Pinterest followers and I don't get how that happened at all, honestly, since hash tagging doesn't exist there. I am good at putting in my own description when re pinning though.
Aside from the people here, most of my followers have come from hashtag searching (I assume). A LOT of people with babies around the same age as L follow me, as do a lot of clothing resale accounts.
I followed a bunch of people from here from the last big IG thread, and then I follow celebrities/bloggers/some Etsy shops.

I really like following Mindy Kaling. I also enjoy Karlie Kloss's account, as well as Michelle Dockery. Recently I started following Clarence House and the British Monarchy.
I follow lots of blogs and HK based photographers as well.
Some celebrities I follow: Mindy kaling, bj Novak, Nikki sixx, the avett brothers, the White House, michelle and Barack Obama, Chrissy teigen, Aaron Paul, Anna Kendrick, aziz ansari, Andrew Zimmern, Anderson cooper.
And I also follow some local restaurants, theaters and breweries.
As stupid as it is, I post photos of my cats with the hashtags #catoftheday #catsofinstagram #picoftheday and got a lot of followers. I also hashtag my state in a lot of my photos and get other locals following me, too.
There's usually a discrepancy between following/followers. Most people have less followers than people they follow.
I don't have many followers, but each of them are people I know and trust. (Some are from here but only a handful).
This is true, generally because most people follow celebrities or other popular public feeds that don't follow everyone back. I have more following than followers; everyone I follow that I know personally follows me back, but I follow the Kardashians and none of those bitches follow me. lol.
Most of my following/followers are friends and family (and linking to FB makes it easy to find them, as others have said), with a few from here but only those I've met IRL. Speaking of which, @weeble, I am PMing you!
eta: I will sometimes get stranger requests after I start following a new celebrity or blogger, but I always ignore those – I am not desperate for followers or likes and keep my feed private for a reason. Hashtags will also bring more followers but only if your feed is public; if it's private, you and your followers will be able to see it under the tag but no one else will. There are a lot of IG users who just spam for more followers.

I have it linked to FB, so a lot are from there. Hashtagging is a good way to get followers, although it's people you don't know, if you care about that sort of thing. I'm kind of an InstaWhore.
