Oooh, fun!
Emergency savings / Other savings (I assume this means give up contributing, and we're pretty set) Hairdresser - blowouts (I only go once or twice a year) Organic groceries More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Leisure travel Going out to eat Netflix / Hulu / VOD 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol) High-speed internet (NEVER!!)
I do not have: Housekeeper Cable TV Amazon Prime membership Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school Doggy daycare College savings Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Manicure/pedicure
We don't have kids or a dog, so that puts us ahead in this game right? LOL.
Things we DO have/Enjoy: Housekeeper Cable TV High-speed internet More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Organic groceries High-end clothing and accessories Disposable toilet paper (lol) Leisure travel Hairdresser- LOW END Manicure/pedicure Going out to eat Emergency savings Other savings 401(K) contributions
Things I'd be willing to cut (in a dire emergency): Luxury goods Organic/High end grocery stuff Mani/Pedi Travel Cut back on eating out. Housekeeper Vacation Home
More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Hairdresser - blowouts Manicure/pedicure Doggy daycare Housekeeper Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Cable TV Netflix / Hulu / VOD Organic groceries Amazon Prime membership Going out to eat Disposable toilet paper (lol) High-speed internet Leisure travel Private school College savings Other savings 401(K) contributions Emergency savings
I WAH, so high-speed internet is non-negotiable for me.
I'd cut almost anything else if financially necessary, but I really, really, really like organic groceries, a housekeeper and having access to childcare and would cut those last. I would probably take money FROM savings to keep going with those things if we were experiencing a temporary hurdle, particularly since a nanny & housekeeper would allow me to focus more on working and making money.

Starting with cut first: Manicure/pedicure Hairdresser - blowouts High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Organic groceries Amazon Prime membership Housekeeper Cable TV College savings Other savings High-speed internet Leisure travel Going out to eat Emergency savings 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Don't have: Doggy daycare Subscription boxes Netflix / Hulu / VOD Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity
Manicure/pedicure Netflix / Hulu / VOD Cable TV Organic groceries Emergency savings Other savings High-speed internet Going out to eat Leisure travel Hairdresser Housekeeper 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Everything listed in order of things I want least to most.
Things I have that I would cut: Leisure travel More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Organic groceries Housekeeper Going out to eat College savings Emergency savings Other savings High-speed internet 401(K) contributions Amazon Prime membership Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Things I don't have: Cable TV Netflix / Hulu / VOD Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school (n/a)
Things I don't want: Hairdresser - blowouts Manicure/pedicure Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Doggy daycare (n/a)
Only considering those not related to kids (since we don't have any):
More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity - meaning I'm keeping 2 cars for the 2 of us (I list this first because it's the biggest expense) High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) - I don't wear makeup Manicure/pedicure - I hate manis/pedis so it's not hard to "give them up" Subscription boxes - not actually sure what this is Cable TV - we don't have cable anyway High-end clothing and accessories - I don't think any of my clothes count as high-end anyway Doggy daycare - our jobs are flexible enough and we spend enough time outdoors that this is more of a want than a need Housekeeper - we actually don't have one at the moment so I guess that indicates it's lower priority than the other things below, but we are planning to get one soon Hairdresser - though I only get my hair cut every ~9 months anyway Amazon Prime membership - just got this for the first time last month Netflix / Hulu / VOD - here's where things would actually start to hurt Other savings Organic groceries Going out to eat Leisure travel High-speed internet - we lived without this at home for a year back in 2004ish. I still don't know how we did it. 401(K) contributions Emergency savings - prioritized more than retirement because it could impact me sooner Disposable toilet paper (lol) - because if we get to the point where we can't afford TP anymore there are some other issues going on!
First things to cut: Leisure travel Cable TV More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Organic groceries High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Hairdresser Going out to eat Housekeeper Other savings 401(K) contributions Emergency savings Disposable toilet paper
Doesn't apply to me: High-speed internet (we just use internet on our phones/hot spot when at home) Netflix / Hulu / VOD Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school Subscription boxes Amazon Prime membership (I get a free one at work) College savings Doggy daycare Manicure/pedicure
Cable TV Amazon Prime membership Going out to eat Netflix / Hulu / VOD High-speed internet Other savings 401(K) contributions Emergency savings Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Is the toilet paper thing some sort of inside joke?
Of the things I have/do today: Other savings College savings Leisure travel Amazon Prime membership Cable TV High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) Manicure/pedicure Hairdresser - blowouts/hilights Going out to eat Netflix / Hulu / VOD High-speed internet 401(K) contributions
Of the things I don't have but want, here they are from most wanted to least: MOAR TRAVEL High-end clothing and accessories Housekeeper More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Organic groceries Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school (would rather just move to the neighborhood with the good public HS)

These are in first we'd cut to last order.
Don't have now and would cut if had: Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Amazon Prime membership Hairdresser - blowouts Manicure/pedicure
Cut: Netflix / Hulu / VOD Cable TV More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity (this is my DH's main hobby, may cut 1-2 but not all unless we were at risk of not paying basic bills) Organic groceries Going out to eat (we have cut done to 1 a month or every other month already--cutting more would be hard for us) Other savings
Don't have now but wouldn't cut if we had it: Housekeeper
You can attempt to pry it from my cold, dead hands if you aren't afraid of me haunting you forever: High-speed internet Disposable toilet paper Emergency savings 401(K) contributions Leisure travel
Don't have: Doggy daycare Subscription boxes Extraneous cars Round the clock childcare/nanny (nanny is here 14 hours a week while I do paid work, so I assume that doesn't count) Blowouts (I do get regular cuts and highlights, though)
Of those remaining, I would cut in this order: Amazon Prime High end makeup Pedicures (I get them rarely as is and never do manis) High end clothes/accessories (most of my clothes are not high end as it is) Cable Netflix Organic groceries Other savings (we have pretty strong savings as is, so I would feel okay foregoing non-retirement/college savings for a while) Going out to eat Leisure travel College savings Private school (our public schools are not acceptable, IMO--I would feel very differently about this if we lived elsewhere) 401(k) contributions Emergency savings
I am not including high-speed internet because getting rid of it would cost me my job, so it will never make financial sense to do so as long as I am working.
Eating out and leisure travel are tough for me to place in the order of priority, because scaling them way back would be one of my first ways to reduce costs, but eliminating them completely (which is what I assume you mean) would be much more difficult. Same with nice clothes and stuff like salon services. I would cut way back, but wouldn't vow never to get another pedicure unless things were really desperate.
Forgot to include disposable toilet paper. My honest answer is that if we were living so close to the edge that we couldn't afford toilet paper, we would likely ask my parents or ILs for money. My parents have always told all their kids that if we are ever in a position where we cannot pay for food, shelter, or medical care, they will cover us. I feel like toilet paper must be included in that.

This is fun in a ridiculously nerdy way We don't have a lot of the items that are on here already. I would continue to buy Organic when possible as long as the price difference isn't exorbitant - H would rather cut that and keep his toy car. We both prioritize travel over additional savings as we have comfortable savings already, but retirement is the one thing I really would not change unless in dire straights.
Would cut in this order: Going out to eat High-end clothing and accessories High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity - H would disagree with this one being here, but I'm the one answering - he has a fun car that he only drives when it's sunny Netflix High-speed internet Organic groceries Other savings Leisure travel Emergency savings 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Things we do not have/do: Housekeeper Cable TV Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school Subscription boxes Hairdresser - blowouts Manicure/pedicure Doggy daycare College savings - no kids yet Amazon Prime membership
I don't have kids so those things don't apply to me but....
Things I don't currently have/do and would obviously cut first: Amazon Prime membership Netflix / Hulu / VOD Subscription boxes Manicure/pedicure Organic groceries Doggy daycare Hairdresser Cable TV Housekeeper
Things I hardly do now anyways: Going out to eat Leisure travel
Then: High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories - and shoes and handbags More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity - what can I say? I love cars lol Emergency savings Other savings
Would not cut: High-speed internet - need for work Disposable toilet paper (lol) retirement contributions
Amazon Prime membership #2 High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say
Housekeeper
Doggy daycare
Netflix / Hulu / VOD
KEEP
College savings Emergency savings Other savings 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper
SCALE BACK Cable TV High-speed internet Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare
Going out to eat
Normally I'd say get rid of, but all work and no play makes people CRAZY. If you have cable, dial it back to basic and if you have cable, no need for Netflix. Watch what ever they are showing!
WHY DO YOU HAVE?
Private school Organic groceries # - High-end clothing and accessories
Sorry, but as I look at this list, I see people I know who are snobs . THATS JUST PEOPLE I KNOW..I AM NOT CALLING YOU A SNOB. Personally, If I had to save money, they would go in the first category, get rid of right now.
Things I Could Easily Cut: Housekeeper (i reserve the right to revise this if we move into a house instead of my easily cleaned 900 sq ft apt) More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) Doggy daycare (no pets) Amazon Prime membership Hairdresser - blowouts (easy to cut blowouts, I'd still need at least a haircut every few months) Manicure/pedicure (would cut back definitely, but still need a pedicure regularly in the summer. winter i go without) Leisure travel High-end clothing and accessories (though this would upset me) Netflix / Hulu / VOD Emergency savings (we just have a big pot, no segregated funds) Subscription boxes (I don't know what this is, so prob easy to cut
If I Absolutely Had To: Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare (don't have, but prob will soon) Private school (don't have it, but i might have it)
Never: Cable TV High-speed internet Organic groceries Disposable toilet paper (lol) Going out to eat College savings (don't have yet, but we probably will (FX) 401(K) contributions Other savings

The order in which I would cut things: Amazon Prime membership Cable TV High-speed internet Organic groceries High-end clothing and accessories Hairdresser - blowouts Leisure travel Going out to eat Other savings Emergency savings College savings 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol) Private school
Since I'm retired, I don't actually formally contribute to 401(k) and other savings on a regular basis, but if I had to dip in to savings to get over a rough patch, that is the order I would dip into them. I would dip into savings to pay for toilet paper. And I would wipe my ass on newsprint to keep my kids in their schools of choice.
These don't apply: Housekeeper Netflix / Hulu / VOD Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) Manicure/pedicure Doggy daycare
Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Housekeeper Doggy daycare (assuming I had a dog) Manicure/pedicure More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Organic groceries Netflix / Hulu / VOD Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Cable TV High-speed internet Hairdresser - blowouts Private school Leisure travel Amazon Prime membership Going out to eat College savings Other savings 401(K) contributions Emergency savings Disposable toilet paper
Housekeeper (dont have one now so thats easy) More cars than needed subscription boxes nanny/around the clock/live-in care manicure/pedicure high-end makeup high-end clothes leisure travel hairdresser - blowouts going out to eat organic groceries private school doggie daycare cable tv netflix/hulu high speed internet amazon prime college savings other savings emergency savings 401(k) contributions disposable toilet paper
ETA: oh I did the whole list. Some of those dont apply to me but I acted as if the whole list did lol. I don't buy high-end makeup or clothes now but I could cut the budget of what I DO spend there, for example.
In order they would be cut: High-end clothing and accessories (not really a cut since I have one high-end pair of shoes and one high-end purse) Manicure/pedicure (only go 1-2 times per year so, again, not really a cut) Organic groceries High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) Hairdresser - blowouts Emergency savings Going out to eat Amazon Prime membership Netflix / Hulu / VOD Leisure travel College savings Other savings High-speed internet 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol)
Does not apply: Housekeeper Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity

I got rid of the things we don't have.
Cable TV Manicure/pedicure High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Netflix / Hulu / VOD Organic groceries Amazon prime Leisure travel Housekeeper Going out to eat High-speed internet College savings Other savings 401K Disposable toilet paper
I would cut, in this order: Cable TV Amazon Prime membership Emergency savings (we're good on this) Other savings Going out to eat Organic groceries Hairdresser - blowouts Netflix / Hulu / VOD College savings 401(K) contributions Disposable toilet paper (lol) High-speed internet - must have for my job.
I do not have: Housekeeper Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Leisure travel Manicure/pedicure Doggy daycare
Is the toilet paper thing some sort of inside joke? ...
Yes. We've had both "family cloth" discussions (re-usable, washable TP) and rolling-your-own TP discussions on here. I still don't quite get how roll-your-own is a big money saver, or frankly even what it entails.
Amazon Prime Membership Hairdresser Netflix College Savings Leisure Travel Other Savings 401(k) contributions Cable TV High-speed internet Going out to eat Organic groceries Emergency savings Disposable toilet paper

Cable TV High-speed internet Going out to eat Leisure travel Netflix / Hulu / VOD Disposable toilet paper Hairdresser - I am 31 with nearly completely gray hair, it's as essential as the electricity bill Other savings 401(K) contributions
Don't have/spend money on: Emergency savings - ours is fully funded College savings Amazon Prime membership Housekeeper Doggy daycare Manicure/pedicure Organic groceries Subscription boxes High-end makeup (dept. store vs. drugstore, say) High-end clothing and accessories Nanny/around the clock and/or live in childcare Private school More cars than meets your household's minimum requirement for necessity
What I would cut out (in order): Cable TV CSA box Organic food/groceries Mani/pedis (have them every other month) hair cut/color-go to a more affordable salon (like Ulta). I only get my hair done 3x/year Blow outs-I get these once a month Make up (both drug store and Clothes-high end (Nordstrom's) gold prospecting stuff (for DH) selling one of our cars (all are paid off and 10+ yrs old) pet sitter (have a friend do it)
