I rent them from the library (CDs though, not downloads).
Also, I listen to a lot of free podcasts which is a nice alternative to music - The Dinner Party Download, Death Sex + Money, Car Talk, Ted Radio Hour, Radiolab, Freakonomics, This American Life.
I am an audible member so for 14.99 a month I get one "credit" which is basically one audio book. this is not as cheap as renting obviously but is cheaper than buying them, since a lot of the newer or bigger audiobooks cost more than that.

Is the credit for a purchase, or rental?
It's for a purchase, so you may end up with a lot of audiobooks :-) I tend to let the credits build up and then get 4 books at once or something. They have a really good selection.

With Audible, do you download into iTunes, or the Audible App? And can you delete the same book twice? If I delete it from my phone, is it gone for good, or always accessible for re-download?
There's an audible app for your phone. (it may work with itunes but I have never tried it). Once you've bought it, you've bought it, so you can always re-download if you need to. I had to go through and delete some books to make room for my new ones, lol.

Another free option is Librivox, which is basically the audiobook version of Project Gutenberg: books that are out of copyright and are read by volunteers. Quality is... variable.
Random: You can also rent them from Cracker Barrel for $3.49/week.
Huh?! LOL
Not sure if the "huh?" is for Cracker Barrel (I know they don't have them everywhere) or the rental. I've never tried it, but my coworker regularly does this. Apparently, you buy the audiobook and then return it to any Cracker Barrel location when you are done. Your refund is determined by how long you kept the book.
ETA: I love my library's digital lending for my Nook. I've never tried it for audiobooks, but definitely check it out!
Omg I am ObSESSED with audiobooks. I listen to them in the at, when doing chores around the house , while gardening and while exercising. I also use the OverDrive app through my public library. Highly recommended!

Library as well. I have an ipad and I don't even need the Overdrive app. Just log in to library2go.com, log in with your library info (after you get your card) and look for e-books and audio-books. The ebooks I can read through the Kindle app. Not sure about the audio-books but maybe you need the Overdrive app for that
