I know most people don't like them, but we have used prefolds 99% of the time. We love them. I haaaaated stuffing pockets and we only had AIO and I didn't like it.
Can you try a trial run from Abby's Lane or Jullian's Drawers to see if it is for you before you make a huge investment. The easiest ones for others to use are pockets or AIO's- I use mostly BumGenius, Swaddlebees, Smarti Pants (a few) but I really like fitted the most- I have BumGenius, B4s(I like a lot), Goodmamas and for covers I use Thirsties. I have never used prefolds so I can't speak to them. Good luck. This is my second child in cloth and I was able to use the stash from my first with a few girly splurges. It has been easy peasy.

We did prefolds & covers for newborn size (with some NB all in ones for nighttime ease)- they are so cheap. I got 2 dozen newborn prefolds in seconds Green Mountain Diapers and love them.
Once he was 10ish lbs we switched to pockets and haven't looked back. We have a mix of BG4.0s and Kawaii. Honestly I like the Kawaii as much as (if not more than) the BGs and they are so inexpensive.
Bonus- the newborn prefolds are the perfect size when tri-folded to be stuffed in the pockets for more absorbency than the MF inserts. (Thanks for whoever here told me that- I think ojo!)
We did prefolds and pockets at the newborn stage, moved to almost all pockets until she was about a year old, then were about 50/50 pockets and fitteds.

I would absolutely do the trial from Jillian's Drawers or similar. What works for some babies and families isn't the best for others.
We have found BumGenius 4.0 and Freetimes work best for us, but the now that he's getting bigger, I'm planning to swap out the microfiber inserts for something natural (they seem to hold onto stink).
I think for hypothetical #2, I might want to try some prefolds and covers. They were intimidating with B, he was so tiny and squirmy, so we just went for AIOs from BumGenius and some Kissaluv fitteds with covers.

Another pocket lover here. We use BumGenius 4.0's stuffed with alva bamboo inserts. I also have a few Charlie Banana pockets that I don't quite like as much. Softbum Omni pickets are also nice.

Personally I like one size pocket diapers. In the 0-12 month age fuzzibunz worked really well for my skinny kid (they're narrower than most other brands in the crotch). I also like the microfiber inserts because they come out of a spin cycle practically dry already. Once he was about 15lbs I liked my charlie banana diapers a lot. Those two brands are fairly expensive though. I also love sunbaby and alva baby brands, which are cheaper ($7 each iirc) bonus, they have really cute prints.

I have tried so many different type tyles and have found my favorites to be flip all In twos, and thirstie all in ones. I buy from cotton babies and from sweet bottom babies.
I have a NB diaper stash I'd be happy to send you (for free). It's just sitting in my closet. It's some prefolds, covers, some fitteds, and a few AIOs. LMK. I can send you pictures.
I was going to sell it but it's a PITA. I'd rather just pass it on to someone who can use it.
Eta- some ppl prefer to do disposables for NB since it's easierI totally understand that, too. No pressure!

I would also highly recommend doing a trial so you can try out different types of diapers, and maybe wait until your daughter is a little bit bigger and able to fit into one size diapers so you can get a better idea of what you like.
We use all kinds of diapers and have had pretty good luck with all. I have BG Freetimes (all in ones) and 4.0s (pockets), Flips, Applecheeks, Best Bottoms, Totsbots, and Econobums, and for the most part, I make my own inserts from bamboo and zorb. I've had great luck with this combination (may be an option if you're crafty). I think the Best Bottoms and Applecheeks work particularly well for my son who is on the smaller side, but I've heard from moms with chunkier babies that they aren't so ideal. I really like my Flips because I can use the covers over and over again (till they get poopy) and I can use pretty much whatever insert I like in them. I also lay inserts on top of my Applecheeks, vs stuffing them.
Good luck in your CD journey! Oddly enough, I've met some awesome friends through my local cloth diapering group. If you can, seek out some local help, it's nice to have.
We did prefolds early on, but I stopped liking them when he got wiggly. I use pockets now, primarily kawaii and sunbaby. Cheap but good.
I stuff diapers at night and it takes me 5-10 minutes every 2 days.
Yes this. My first was a very chill baby and I loved prefolds but with my second I hated the time it took to get the diaper folded and using the snappi and then putting on the cover. Too much crying for my liking. I switched to disposables until he fit in pockets and just stuff the Pocket before im about to change him

Oh another suggestion is to go into a baby boutique that sells cloth diapers. The sales people are usually great at explaining all about the different types and often let you test different ones out in store on dolls. A lot of boutiques also offer classes, either for free or for a small fee like $5.

I do prefolds and covers at night and pockets during the day. I have alva, bum genius, Charlie banana, and Kawait pockets. I love CB the best but none of them leak. CB just fits great and is trimmest. I prefer snaps to velcro but my husband is opposite.

I love our BG Freetimes. I was getting pissed at them for a while, because they didn't smell clean anymore no matter what I did. I saw people here post about drying them outside, and voila! No more stink and no more diaper rashes!

I live near cotton babies store, so I'm pretty loyal to their brands. I really like flips since you don't have to put in a prefold you can just lay it in the diaper and you can use whatever you want inside, which had changed as my daughter had grown. I also like having a few freetimes or pockets for when someone else is doing a diaper change or for the wiggly baby stages.
