In the last year or so I've been on a mission to reduce paper and clutter. I've switched over to paperless statements for everything I can, and have scanned and shredded everything I can't. (Still working on scanning and shredding some of the backlog.) I have an external hard drive and back up at least a couple times a month, but I'm not sure that's good enough for all of our records, financial docs, etc. If I leave the external drive in the fire safe, it realistically means I'm going to remember/take the time to back up less frequently. If I leave it on my desk, god help us, what if there's a fire or something? Or what if it's in the safe and the safe melts anyway?
I've considered Carbonite or similar, but I hate having another subscription fee. I am starting to lean toward it feeling worth it for peace of mind though, to have offsite storage.
Crashplan still has the best reviews on The Wire Cutter. I should really do this, and remember to back up to an external drive that stays in my office, etc. They also do seeded backup, so that if you want to back up your photos and videos, you won't get in trouble with your ISP.
I have 3 external drives. One I use daily and pretty much goes with me everywhere. Then I have 2 larger ones (1 gpoes in my safe and the other in my parent's safe) that I back the daily one up to once a month.
So if something ever happened to the daily one, the most I would ever lose is up to one months worth of info.
It might seem like a hassle to back up a back up but it works for me.

We have the files on the computer and the backup hard drive in a safe deposit box and another one at work, so two backups. The point for us is backing up pictures and having the backup not in the house. DH says that if you need the backups that often then carbonite could be a good idea. DH and I update our backup maybe every 6 months (we haven't gone paperless and actually demand paper). Keep in mind that online backups can't guarantee security. We also have some important files on a USB stick.
