Wow, i didn't expect the mariners would ever trade Ichiro. But he's reached the point where he's not worth what he's being paid.
Eta: I looked at the stats on the minor leaguers and they're ok but not great. It depends on how DJ Mitchell, who is a starter, holds up when he gets to the major leagues. Since Ichiro was probably not a type A free agent this might have been worth it.
Statheads have been wondering when father time would catch up Ichiro. It looks like it might have been last year. If his contract expires getting prospects for him is the best the team could hope for. He's 38 so there aren't many good years left for him.
Also Ichiro's been on losing teams with the M's basically since the Mariners stopped being good in 2003. I sort of feel bad for players in that situation, it'll be nice that he gets another shot at a World Series ring.
Can I ask a dumb question? Were the Mariners good once? We've only been here a year and are loving being able to actually go to ballgames (not having a MLB team back home) but it doesn't seem like they have a huge fan base.
We're going next week for the Mariners-Jays which should be good as so many will come down from Vancouver for it - will Ichiro be gone by then?
Sorry - dumb - I know little about baseball, but love ballgames and I'd really like to understand the Mariner's as a team a bit more.

Yes! They were the American League West champs in 1995, 1997, and 2001. I loved the 1995 team!

Even when the mariners aren't good, they can get a pretty good crowd and ballpark is fun. Especially when Felix Hernandez is pitching.
I didn't even live here and I remember that team, especially the comeback against the Yankees in the playoffs. I loved those games where Norm Charlton came in and was running on fumes yet still pitched great.
