Our tenants just recently moved out.. they left the place decent but they destroyed our glass oven top. Basically, it looks like they let stuff spill all over it and haven't cleaned it in a year. The inside of the oven also hasn't been cleaned, but that's not a huge concern.
They were good tenants and always paid on time.. so I am not sure what to do with this. I am leaning toward just letting it go but man I am bitter about this, I loved our glass oven top, it was like new when we rented it to them.
Can you guys think of any tricks? We tried baking soda, white vinegar, and ton of oven cleaning products.
Would you let this go or charge them something out of their deposit? Is anything can even be done other than replace it? We have some new tenants moving in this week, so obviously it's not a HUGE issue.

That is not typical wear and tear, so they should be charged. The amount you can deduct from their deposit will depend on your state laws, but probably around $50. I would put it under the category of non-standard wear/tear or non-standard post move out cleaning. Was this noted in their move out walk-through?

looks like wear and tear to me, combined with a little not knowing how to clean a glass top.
sorry it looks like crap, but as long as the burner works I don't think it will prevent new tenants from renting from you. Unless, we are talking a luxury penthouse apartment. In that case I would take my 100k/mo elsewhere.
Depending on the level of headache, I would decide how much to charge them.
If it takes a little work, but ultimately comes off? Probably nothing.
If it doesn't come all the way off, or if it takes major effort - probably $50-$100 deducted.
This picture was taken after cleaning it with soap, than special oven cleaners, baking soda and vinegar I've been cleaning it every day since they moved out.
It was not noted when we did the walk through because I thought it would come off.. we told the guy that this walk through wasn't the final decision and we will let him know if we find anything. I have close up pictures of the oven before and after he moved out.
Do you guys any tips to get this off?
It DOES look slightly better than the picture now after scrubbing it over almost a week.

Glass top stoves need special cleaners and if you didn't tell them and they didnt know, I'm not sure how mad you can be.
The only reason I knew was because the first house I rented with a glass cook top the ll left the cleaner and told me to use only cleaners specifically for glass cook tops.
But you're the ll and if you want to withhold some deposit then that's with in your rights I would assume.
I can always get mine clean if I put cleaner on it (ran out of the special glass stuff and learned that Vim works just as well), and then turn the elements on for like 20 seconds. Just enough to be working with a hot surface. Then I use a rubber scrubby and it looks like new.

Yeah, I guess I get that. From now on, I will tell all the future tenants how to clean it and we are even leaving a special glass top oven cleaner.
That being said, I didn't know how to clean it either when we bought the condo, but just scrubbing it some cleaning solutions did the job and it never got close to looking like that. BUT I also understand they are tenants and of course they aren't going to take care of it like we did.
Tops, we'll probably charge $50 from their deposit considering we hired a cleaning service after them to clean out the whole kitchen (they left it dirty) and we have been scrubbing that glass oven top everyday since they moved. Does that sound reasonable?

That sounds plenty reasonable. I'm sorry about your cooktop. And don't do the razor blade thing it can leave really bad scratches on the glass. A plastic credit card or putty knife is a better option.

After trying every trick mentioned on here and scrubbing for about an hour straight.. this is the best I could do. But still much better!Attachment Deleted
Looks way better and definitely good enough for a rental! Make sure you leave the glass top cleaner and the scrub that usually comes back with it for the new tenants.
I think it looks a lot better now! For future reference, you can just replace the glass top - not the entire oven, which, while not cheap, is less expensive at least. We had to do that when ours cracked. (You might already know that but I didn't until I had the issue.)
