DH and I drove alongside these guys for several blocks the other day. At each stop light I was laughing so hard (as were they) and I asked if I could take their picture. They were good sports and the driver said, "He said it would save him 30 minutes, so I helped a bro out!" It was quite funny. But omg- SHORTS! FLIP FLOPS! And of course no helmets!

They are my patient population. Head + pavement + 40mph - helmet = trauma ICU.

Yep. Hell, not even 40mph. I know someone who's husband was going no more than 5mph because he was at the end of their driveway. No one is sure what happened, but he crashed the bike and nearly died. Massive head trauma. He survived, but has a traumatic brain injury and isn't the same person. He didnt even remember his own wife and kids for the first several months after he finally woke up.

At least he woke up. Motorcyle head injuries are usually prime candidates for organ donation.

@kande818 you should be a good person to ask: is it true that a helmet really won't protect a rider if they are going more than 5 mph? When I was working for the legislature on transportation issues, I saw some studies to this effect.
I had a friend that was wearing a helmet (full size, not the top of the head only kind) that slammed into a low retaining wall at 60 mph and flipped over it. Even with his helmet, he still cracked the base of his skull.
I see people on motorcycles dressed like that all.the.time and I just hope they never get in an accident. I'm pretty sure they all forgot their brains at home.

As I said in the other post, my dad was wearing his helmet. He was still fucked up. His helmet came off and broke in half. He slid on his head for several feet. Never the same agaun

My dad FELL ASLEEP going 65mph and flipped his bike. Then his body slid across the pavement while his airborne bike did flips above him (and came down on his back once).
He broke, like, everything. But he was wearing a helmet, and he lived.

Idiots. Straight up idiots.
I don't have leathers (yet), but I make sure I'm covered from head to toe - jeans, leggings, layered up top with a long sleeve thermal hoodie plus my windproof jacket, and my clunker cowboy boots with the thick rubber soles. The boy has a helmet for me and makes me wear a pair of his gloves before he'll let me anywhere near his bike.
During Bike Week about a month ago, we saw women on the back of sport bikes wearing shorts and flip flops. No. No nope nope nope nope. Not ever. Dumb asses.

I'm not sure at what speed a helmet is no longer helpful. I really think it depends on the type of helmet, where the point of impact is, speed, etc. I really deal with the aftermath of the accident, not the actual accident itself. I've had pts going 80+ mph, no helmet with a better outcome than someone at 40mph with a helmet.

It definitely also depends on the type of helmet - full face vs skid lid. The ones with just a chin strip don't work as well as a full face, but are much much better than no helmet.
No, I do not have statistics or anything official to back it up.

I saw a group of motorcyclists once where the women on the back were wearing thong bikini bathing suits. I am scarred for life.
I hate motorcycles. I almost hit one a few years ago and I was going probably 70mph. It was a sport bike that had to be going at least 90mph if not faster. In my panic I then almost hit the trooper that was chasing him. It took about 15 years off my life. Even not driving like a lunatic I just don't get the need to do something so dangerous. However, if you do it why not wear something that could save your life?!
My mom was a nursing major in college. She still talks about how she did some time in the icu and saw a motorcycle accident and decided to change her major.
You all would die if you ever came down here during bike week. No helmet laws and on the beach. Flip flops, bare heads, and motorcycles EVERYWHERE. I don't even like to drive during those two weekends here. It makes me so anxious.
