Don't feel stupid for feeling sad, I would feel exactly the same way. My mom has an African violet that she took from her mom's house when she died in 1988. She has kept it alive for 26 years! I told her that she needed to leave responsibility for the plant in her will to her friend and not to me. I would be so devastated if I killed it (and I would kill it).
Do you have a picture of it when it was alive? There's another thread about everyjuan painting things - you could ask her to paint it from a picture and hang it on your wall. Then you'll have it forever!
"They need SUN and they need to be washed. Put the pot in the sink and run the water luke warm into the pot soaking the bark mulch, that they should be planted in and while doing this you MUST soak the air roots....as you spray water on them they will change color from light to dark. So you must get all of the air roots....even the ones sticking up out of the pot. Do this ounce a week and watch em bloom.
With proper care, that will take a while, but when all blooms are gone and there is no sign of anymore on the stem, cut it off back down by the leafs."

I hope this helps.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I will do this and hope for the best!

I got an orchid from some friends after I miscarried my twins. I thought I killed it a few times now, but it was fine! Once, it started an entirely new main stem! I did have to look up the orchid for the particular kind of care it needed, but luckily it was a low labor one.
I hope yours comes back too. Sometimes, it needs a breather & then will come back like gang busters! <3
