Look people I am assuming you actually have real in-person human interaction at some point. Why is this discussion about the board? Are you people living in isolated dark basements while peeing in jars because you can't pull yourselves away from CEP??
I do come here to see/learn about opposing viewpoints. I don't often post much about my own though because, unfortunately it usually ends up with the board ganging up on me.Â
I'll bite. The board tends to gang up on you, because:
a) you tend to make blanket statements and/or cannot see that there is some grey in a situation and not everything is black and white
b) you make negative statements and don't come back to defend them, even when people ask you genuinely non-snarky questions about said statement
I think it's one thing to have opposing views, but it's another when someone says, it's not that simple and gives you an example, and you still come back and say "well, I did xyz or there's no excuse for xyz".
No ones saying you have to temper your opinion, but delivery is everything.
FWIW, overall across the boards, I think your posts have been more tame and kind than when you first started posting.
On some issues, I think you certainly can get alternative viewpoints here.
Maybe on whether SUVs are evil or which mascara is best.
Disagree. I think the strong Cons hold their own. Also the Israel threads give all views. I am able to "play" republican with my own mom cause of this board. That speaks volumes.
If someone messes with origami @helenabonhamcarter Ciceroteflepdruidpy4mIIOY Imma cut them. So yah I am down with conservatives. Don't fuck with my clique.
ETA: julief too!! Don't mess with my FOLKS. I am oppressed too??? SHIT!!
Petitioning to be in said clique.
Ditto.
I'm conservative, my immediate family is conservative. My tight social circle is a mixed bag- R's, D's, daughter of a former D senator, only one nut. Most of my close friends are moderate, very few are far right or left.
In my broader circle of friends/acquaintances, there are very few obnoxious zealots. Of them, the D's are far worse. The worst D offender also has the biggest case of STFUPet ever, so they're extra insufferable (No, I do not need an update with sad faces when your dog finally lifts his leg to pee for the first time).

The entire reason why I am here on CEP is because I avoid talking politics with friends and family, because I like them and don't want to argue or cause contention with people I like. This board is my outlet (not that I don't like you guys, but you know what I mean).
And if I chose my relationships based on peoples' political affiliations I would have a lot fewer friends, and one less spouse.

Yes but your problem is that you fall on the opposite side of human decency and that's where you run into trouble. You are quite often the (caricature of) Marie Antoinette of the board. Let them eat cake and all that. I have seen very little compassion, understanding, or acknowledgement of the difficulties people might face. So yeah, you're going to get jumped when you say things that are dismissive, cruel, or ignorant regardless of which end of the political spectrum you place yourself.
My closest sister (I have 4) is a Republican. We simply do not talk about politics. We do discuss some social issues but are very careful to be respectful of one another. The husband of our closest married couple friends is an R also. We have great discussions quite often. Again - mutual respect is the key. But I guess that's the same for all human interaction.
I don't think people always realize how fucking obnoxious their own side can be. I mean I'm FB friends with a lot of you and I have to contain my eye rolls sometimes over the obnoxious and insulting things some of you post, a few of you with serious regularity. Maybe you don't think the gays are injecting mexican children with Ebola and sending them across the border to live on my grandma's social security check but damn, I have no words sometimes.
So is this your hint that all my Michael Jackson posits need to stop?
Look, I'm mad we never talked about Bey and her "award."
I lol that people think they are getting alternative viewpoints here.
Look I have spent 7 long years here chipping away at the fear of viewing The Color Purple and developing a deep fan base for Idris Elba. That was not easy and I had to combat some deeply help views to make that happen.
lolol
But there is a lot of truth to this. I think this board is great for getting people to think about certain aspects they've never really considered. I'd say definitely alternative viewpoints are dissected and discussed here and you can learn a ton, change your outlook, open yourself up to new opinions and experiences. But I don't think those will be traditional political viewpoints. It would be things like race, sexism, feminism, poverty, cultural differences, history, the educational system, etc. Things that aren't necessarily partisan though one's partisan outlook may color those issues, kwim?
Like the Roots discussion. That's not republican or democrat. Same thing with the logistics of being poor or working class, nutrition, parenting styles, coded language, neighborhood dynamics, school uniform discussions, World Cup soccer, the IOC, etc.

Black or white, if you have some kind of philosophical reason for refusing to watch The Color Purple, we can't be friends.
I cannot read The Color Purple. I cannot get past the way it is written. I don't mind listening to people speak that way but reading it makes me want to get out a red pen.

Re: coded language.
The Do You Rent discussion just yesterday was eye opening for me. I haven't had the time to come.back to it, but that is something that NEVER occurred to me before. Partly because I think the do you own or rent conversation among WHITES is pretty.common in big cities and obviously if you're white asking another white person if they rent, there's no race issue involved. But I "get" how the race factor laid over that conversation completely changes it.
Alternative view point, broadened mind.
I had never thought about that before either but for the opposite reason. In my (old) area almost no one rents. It would be very strange to ask or assume someone was a renter. I think the OP said her area was like that too so I get why she was upset. But in big cities I can see why it would be different. Where I am now it would out of the ordinary to own.
It's one thing when there are issues that I'm passionate about, but there are issues where I haven't really formed an opinion. Those are the threads I read but don't post because the only things that I could say would be dumber than usual.
I honestly didn't realize there were areas where no one rents. Where I am, it's just a question of budget. I've seen houses for rent in all kinds of areas, at least in the listings. There are neighborhoods where they aren't allowed to put a sign out so if you were driving through, you wouldn't know.
Has anyone seen Circle of Friends, that Irish movie with Chris O'Donnell and Minnie Driver? I keep thinking of the scene where Colin Firth refers to Irish-Catholics as "you people."
Even though the thread doesn't ask this, I'm surrounded by libs at work. I came into it thinking it would be interesting, but it has proven to be invaluable. I have two primary opportunities: really hear and learn their passion for stances, and insert alternate passions and viewpoints into discussions.
To that point, seeking out diverse circles is insanely more valuable to me than settling into comfortable chest-bumping zones of likeminded people (where I have been before). IMHO

it's probably our home values went so far in the shitter it was cheaper to buy than rent. It was a new construction area and it tanked so bad. Also our location was terrible so I think renters tended to be more conveniently located. Not that no one rented. We had about 100 homes in our sub and when I was on the HOA board 3 were rented out.

There could be people illegally renting here, but this neighborhood, along with my last one, prohibits it.
But our HOA is really really meek so I imagine they wouldn't care at all if someone broke that rule. So there very well might be renters I do not know about. My last HOA was the devil and was ruthless about it.

I have some con IRL friends. But I really came here to say that I continued my Black Film Experience last night with Waiting to Exhale. I'll try not to pull a muscle patting myself on the back ;-)
So now you know things. lol
Lord Angela Basset, yo. Don't mess with Angela Basset.

Since H is OOT and I need to clean the house, I now feel like I need to watch either Waiting to Exhale or Circle of Friends tonight. YES, I KNOW THEY ARE NOTHING ALIKE.
I can't remember the last controversial thread on a domestic political issue. Maybe the international ones have multiple viewpoints?
My goal really wasn't to start a navel gazing tangent. This board is some things and isn't other things and that is what it is.
The international ones DO have multiple viewpoints, but I think the lack of domestic issue debate has to do with the fact that the the headlines right now are dominated by international issues. My local news last night, which is usually epically awful in quality led with three international stories - Iraq, Israel, and Russia - before getting to the first local story -some dude in Hamilton County lost his pet python.
As for.domestic.issues, there has been debate on here about the significance of the Bork hearings, whether Clinton actually committed perjury, a ton of the SCOTUS opinions from June including ESF and I disagreeing with Voodoo that the buffer zone opinion was wrong, and ESF and I disagreeing with each other about whether the Hobby Lobby decision was anti woman. Tef and I got pissy with each other about NCLB waivers. LaurenPetro and I got pissy with each other about the value of opting out of standardized testing...
Yeah, just because political leanings are the same, doesn't mean we all have the same knee jerk reaction to current events. And while we've always had a problem with issues of national politics being fairly one sided around here, but that doesn't mean that every thread on the dozens of other issues on this board is just an echo chamber.
We joke a lot about proving points through anecdotes, but the diversity in people's life experiences and the anecdotes that come with that do really shape the threads where race, culture, and socioeconomic issues come into play.

I feel like I get to hear different comments and opinions than I would get in real life. People here have the benefit of remembering more/experiencing more than people my age have, in addition to typically being from a different country. When mixed with the fact that Canada's major parties tend to be further left than American parties, I think I am able to hear a lot of perspectives I wouldn't commonly get with people I know in person.

Where I currently live some folks rent. However the neighborhood where I was raised??? Lets just say someone realized we had renters and an emergency Home Owners Meeting was held. The renters had to leave. I was so confused when I was told this story.
