I went to a new shoe store today and they only had one shoe in the box for all of the sizes. So it wasn't just the display, which I understand. Is there a reason for this other than theft prevention?
And no, I didn't ask. There was only one associate and a ridiculous line so I left. Just curious.

We live in a low crime, nice neighborhood.
More than once, I've sat my daughter down to try on shoes at Target, and inside the box is a worn out pair of shoes someone swapped for the brand new shoes.
It may be a corporate decision to do this or they've been burned in the past. Also, if they only have one sales associate and a long line, it would be very easy for someone to swap out a pair of shoes.
It's just odd, and kind of insulting for our area with little crime. No other shoe store in town does this.
And really, I don't want to have to get an associate if I want to try both shoes on and walk around the store in them for a bit before buying.
WELL BACK IN MY DAY!
All shoe stores displayed only one shoe per style. You told an associate why size you wore and they went in the back to see if they had that style in your size. And it was called customer service, not theft prevention.

GET OFF MY LAWN!
Goddammit, I don't want to talk to anyone when I'm shopping unless absolutely necessary, like life or death, preferably. /antisocial

I consider myself pretty social but I don't like interacting with sales people when I'm trying to shop. Leave me in peace and don't pressure me to buy.
I'm really annoyed when I have to wait for a sales associate when shoe shopping. I just want to try the shit on myself. I was waiting at StrideRite for a fucking hour before we got helped. Ugh.

It also cuts down on mismates. I work for a shoe store, and before we started pulling a shoe out, we would have a bunch of single shoes after the sale. While the cashier should be checking sizes, it doesn't always happen if it's busy or the brain doesn't connect that it is two sizes when it is all sale crazy time. Normally the sales associate would be the first check, but that doesn't happen in the case of the customer shopping the sales shoes turning down help. One shoe in the back forced that interaction.
eta: a lot of customers trying to "help" box up shoes mix everything up... Like two different colors in a box
