I sent some toys DS didn't want to a friend across the country. None of the toilets were more than 2 months d and a couple were. Rand new. Value of the toys was probably $50. Shipping was $30. She said she would cover the shipping cost so I asked if she would buy my kid a $30 toy from Amazon and have it shipped to my house (she has Prime). Is that a fair trade? I've never done anything like this.
Aside: we bought an old house (1930s), so I made sure that I was the FIRST person to use the toilet in the pool house when it was newly constructed. I'd never had the pleasure of christening a toilet before.
Why am I telling you people this? Oh god. I'm sober so I can't even blame day drinking.
It's fine to ask for a toy in lieu of money; in fact, it's probably easier for her. But did she know shipping would be $30 beforehand? If someone was sending me a few toys I wouldn't expect shipping to be more than like $12 - $15. As long as she's ok with the amount, you're fine.
And lol at toilets. That would be some pricey shipping.

She didn't know. Which is probably why I feel badly. I had no idea it was going to cost that for shipping.
I wouldn't have spent $30 to ship $50 of toys. And I'd be annoyed to spend 25-30 on toys I didn't pick out myself, since I rarely buy toys. Sorry. I mean in the end it's probably fine. But if i were your friend I would probably be quietly annoyed.

This is where I'm at. I would rather pick out my own toys instead of paying $30 towards shipping.
This reminds me of when my friend was nice enough to let me borrow some stuff for David when he was born, then she moved across the country and wanted it back when she was pregnant again, lol. It was like almost $100 in shipping. I was like.... It's my own fault, I'm not blaming her but hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
Ouch. I would be a little annoyed. I'd rather pitch in an extra $20 & buy what I wanted new. It's totally a live & learn thing. Y'all both know for next time.
I'd be annoyed as the friend. Did she ask you for these toys? If a friend said to me, "hey, I've got $50 worth of used toys you can have for the bargain price of $30," I'd politely decline.
How did it come about that you would send the used toys? Did she request them? Did you offer?
Either way, she said she would cover shipping, but I would be a little taken aback if I found out after the fact that it was $30. I guess I'd be expecting to spend more like 15 for shipping (it IS super expensive, and maybe I am just out of touch with shipping costs--I am only basing this off of what it costs for shipping when I purchase things online). I probably would have called her when I found out the high shipping price to either make sure it was OK, or I would have only asked her for half that price when asking for shipping money.
To answer the question, though, I think asking for a toy instead of the cash is fine. Just make sure that if she is buying you a 29.99 toy on Amazon, she isn't also having to pay shipping for it that puts it over the 30 bucks she owes you.
