I will be in Amsterdam for a few days at the end of September and would love to do a canal tour, but there seem to be so many and I'm not sure which to choose. Does anyone have a recommendation of one they really liked? Also, if you have any restaurant recommendations, I'd love to hear them. I'll be staying near Centraal Station, but the location isn't nearly as important as the quality of the food. I think we're looking for more casual-type places, like a great gastropub kind of thing. Thanks, ladies!
When we went a friend who lived locally recommended these places. Unfortunately we never made it to any of them but I trust his judgement. Blauw (Indonesian) Diya (Indian) Kosebasi (Turkish) Shabu Shabu (All you can eat, japanese, chinese)
thats the only place I remember eating at in Amsterdam, but it was great!
As far as canals go, just take the canal bus around. We used it as our main source of transportation. We bought a several day pass and hopped on and off.

Care Winkel 43, for their "deep dish" pie
Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx for some delicious frites with unique sauces (I got some Indonesian type of sauce and onions)Manneken Pis is another popular option for frites.
Blauw, Indonesian food
Upstairs Pancake House, small place (only 5-6 tables) and the guy makes them right there in front of you.
I would also recommend going to a grocery store (we went to Albert Heijn) and picking up some food (like gouda cheese and speculaas cookies!) to have a picnic at Vondelpark.
