Is it a bad idea? We would just go for a few days and stay in Reykjavik. We're in a close time zone so jet lag not an issue.
Have done a bit of research and sounds like a good place to get out for a drive. So maybe rent a car for the trip. We'd have three kids with us (5, 2 and newborn) which is kind of hell but we're pretty breezy about stuff.
Considering it because the flights would be free and DH and I are super intrigued by the country,
If you didn't have a newborn I would say it wasn't a bad idea at all. Even with a newborn I would normally say not a big deal, but the cold would give me pause. I think it is a great time to go because you have the chance to see the Northern Lights, and it is gorgeous. Just know you will have to bundle up your newborn a lot - but you live in Scotland if I remember correctly right? I am sure you will be used to bundling the baby anyway then. So, I say go. I love Iceland.

I would say do it!
The weather may or may not be terrible lol. This is always the case here, but if you come prepared then it should be no big deal.
Out of the 3 ages of your kids, I'd say you might have the most issue with the 2 year old honestly. The drive to the really cool close natural wonders (the golden circle) can be long and the wonder is lost on this age. My daughter is 2 and we haven't done the circle with her because I think it would be a hassle. Beware, gas here is incredibly expensive and I've heard car rentals are not cheap, especially since you'll likely need a larger car for car seats.
That being said, the central city is really awesome and so child friendly! Seriously it is hard to find a restaurant that doesn't have a kids area. There are lots of activities for kids around, too. The pools are awesome, even in winter. It's also very pedestrian friendly in the city and very well maintained even if it snows.
I could give you a bunch of info if you like so feel free to ask here or in pm. We've been here 2 months but I've visited a bunch in the past and have a 2 year old and 4 month old. I'll have a much better handle on things available very shortly I'm sure!
