I'm going to head to Sephora later today to look for some mascara and foundation. Anyone have any recommendations? For mascara, I'm looking for something long-lasting that isn't going to flake or smudge, probably waterproof, but that's not a deal breaker for me. For foundation, I have acne-prone skin, so something that's not oily. Something with good coverage, as my complexion isn't the greatest, but I don't want to to feel too heavy.

I'd suggest doing the color match at Sephora for foundation and going from there. The salespeople can help you find the right color and formula.
I'm of no help on mascara - I'm a Cover Girl devotee. I know a lot folks like They're Real by benefit, but it's the kind of product you either love or hate.
From the massive make up thread on CP&E, it was evident that mascara is the most divisive.
If you do decide to try a Benefit mascara, get the small size to try out.
If you buy any other make up frequently, I've gotten a million mascara samples. More than any other type of make up. I would just wait until you could try more things.
For foundation, Hourglass is fantastic if you have oily skin.

I'm really liking Too faced Better than Sex. Still not perfect but not regrets
eta: currently trying bare mineral bare skin and it is just not right for my dry skin. I liked dr.jart bob cream better, but it started to turn orange towards the end of the tube so I didn't rebuy
I really love Hourglass Immaculate, especially because it doesn't irritate my acne-prone skin. See about getting samples of at least a couple of the above recommendations so you can try them out at home and see which one you really like. Samples are one of the many wonderful things about Sephora.
For mascara, Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes is a perennial favorite of mine. Occasionally Sephora will have a gift set of a whole bunch of different mascara samples, which is an awesome way to test out different brands to find your favorite. I don't see it on their website right now, but brick and mortar stores sometimes have leftover stock that has sold out online. Ask about it when you go.

I use NARS cream foundation. I've also liked Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.
I thought DiorShow was the biggest waste of money. $25 and the least waterproof mascara I've ever worn. I returned it and am sticking with my Covergirl. I like Benefit They're Real when I don't need waterproof.

Yep it's called lash stash! It comes with a BM mascara, the Tarte! the better than sex, blink and one other. I love it! It comes with a coupon for a full sized once you figure out which you like best
I was trying to find the link for it, but it looks like they don't have it right now.

I'm going to wildly speculate and say that they've probably pulled it to re-promote the "new" version for the holiday season. A lot of holiday sets debut in September or October, so it'll probably be back soon.

Wait, this isn't waterproof on you? This will stay on me for days and days through multiple showers unless I spend a good five minutes massaging coconut oil on my lashes. I love the way it looks, but I have to really talk myself into putting it on because removing it is such a giant pain in the ass. Tarte's Lights, Cameras, Lashes looks the same on, but is slightly easier to remove.
My favorite mascara right now is Josie Maran's Black Oil.
Foundation - I highly recommend getting samples before committing because finding something that works with your skin and other products is hard. Plus, some are more luminizing and others are mattifying, so you need to decide what kind of finish you want. For example, NARS was just awful on me, really streaky and patchy, but obviously others love it. So IMO, Foundation is the one area where random recommendations aren't going to mean anything.
But in case you have dryish, unpredictable skin, I'll say that I like Laura Mercier (thank you to lasagnasshole for bring allergic so I could have hers). I also love Benefit's Hello Flawless, which is great if you like a glow, though color selection is very limited, so depending on your skin tone, you may be out of luck there.
My favorite thing was actually the Tarte BB cream (the one in the white bottle), which has amazing foundation-like coverage, but even with moisturizer, it's too drying on me. It's also pretty matte.
My everyday stuff is the Peter Thomas Roth CC cream, which has great coverage and doubles as a moisturizer.

ESF, I'm not sure if I've pool tested They're Real. Maybe I'll try that next week. I did have a problem with it Thursday. I think it weighed down my lashes by the end of the day to the extent that they kept poking me in the eye, which caused major irritation.
I've been using Bare Essentials mascara for awhile now and I love it. It lengthens and thickens without clumping and it's waterproof but I can still get it off at the end of the day without a terrible amount of effort.

Thanks ladies! I ended up buying They're Real mascara. I didn't buy any foundation. She color matched me and put a few on my face, and I went home with a sample of the one I liked best, which was Makeup Forever Mat Velvet.
Color match didn't work for me... Color match id'd me as a warm. I'm cool. They put it on, insisted their color match was right and then went wait, that looks orange on you and put me in cool based foundation
Hated Dior mascara too. Like the benefits they're real much better
