It just dawned on me that we haven't even looked for one yet. I start school back up again next week (well starting Wed.) and I know it'll be a whirlwind of being busy before I deliver so I want to knock out as much as I can now.
I'm really not very picky about this and I've got tons of recommendations for one down the street from us so I think I'll go with them. Could I just call there tomorrow and "sign up"? How does this work?
Whenever I needed a Dr. I just called for the first appointment so I don't know if I should call after she's born or do it now. I'm guessing I should at least know if they are accepting new patients.
When we called they scheduled a "meet and greet appt". It was 30 min designated for us to hear about the practice and meet the pediatrician, ask any questions we have, etc.

This is what my place does. I actually have mine tomorrow and I just called last week. They only do them twice a day. I'm sure you don't have to go in but I wanted to at least meet the Dr and get a chance to see the office.
The one we are going with leaves it up to the parents - they will do a meet and greet appointment, or if you aren't up for that then they are fine just waiting until Baby gets here for the first appointments.
We opted for the meet and greet appointment, but haven't went in yet.

You'll want one before you deliver. Once your baby is born they usually set up the first appointments depending on the length of your hospital stay.
I really wanted one who was firm on a vaccination schedule and one who had lactation/breast feeding support readily available. We did a 30 minute meet and greet and picked someone. But that pedi wasn't available for our first appointment and we actually ended up loving the other doc so that is who we ultimately went with.
I went with recs from friends and didn't bother with a formal meet and greet. I went to the office a few weeks ago just to make sure I could find it, parking was ok, etc since I didn't want to be navigating blindly with my newborn. THe receptionist gave me some information and paperwork to complete and bring to the first appointment, but said that one of the peds would be visiting us in the hospital before then. I figured like any other dr., I probably need to interact in "real time" to see if we're compatible. If H or I don't feel comfortable with them after DD is here, we'll just look for someone else at that time.
Thanks. The one that was recommended my friends all said were really supportive to the mother as well. My one friend had a hard time with PPD and she said the staff there were the first people to recognize what was going on and offer advice and support.
I call tomorrow morning. I just don't have time to visit multiple places. I'm assuming I can start at one place and if we don't like it switch later so it's probably no big deal.
I just picked our pediatrician this week actually, and it was much simpler than I was expecting. I had already gotten recs and knew who we wanted to go with, so I just called the office to let them know. She said I could schedule a meet and greet appt, otherwise just put her name down on the paperwork and my OB will let her know when the baby is born.
I didn't opt for the meet and greet, but there is an open house for this clinic in a few weeks so we might go to that.
Our pediatrician practices with the same pediatrician I went to growing up (I liked her but wanted someone younger in hopes of consistency throughout childhood). We called and they offered us a meet and greet. She had also been recommended through a friend so I didn't do a pre-meeting. She (or one of the doctors in the practice) will meet us in the hospital. It was a much simpler process that I thought it would be.
Eh, I picked a pediatrician based on reviews and who accepted my insurance. I didn't set up a meet and greet and told the hospital the pediatrician we chose when I was in labor. They had a pediatrician from the practice there to say hello and check my daughter out and I made an appointment for the day after we got home from the hospital so they could check her out again (she had a little jaundice and we left 24 hours after I gave birth so they wanted to check on her weight/color). It was easy peasy and I was lucky because we chose a good one. It wouldn't take that much time to switch doctors though, I'd think, if you decided you didn't like the one you chose at first. Nothing is set in stone and you still have the power to change your mind if you decide after visiting them a while that you don't like them
Did you do any birthing classes at the hospital? (I am pretty sure we are delivering at the same one) There were 4 practices listed in the literature we got that have privileges there and will see the baby in the hospital. Only one, however, has an office remotely close to where live so it is a no-brainer.

No, we did not but I also have yet to schedule a tour. I'm guessing I can get that information when we go and get the tour?

I will get the folder out and PM you the practices and phone #s in the morning.
They have to be affiliated with your hospital so that they can see her while she's there. I didn't do a meet and greet either. I prefer larger practices with 3+ doctors since usually they have better hours and can offer things like same-day sick visits.
They did have a nice website though with pics of the docs.
We went with the pedi that works with our hospital. Our OB recommended them and they had good reviews. I called a few weeks before DD was born just to give them our info but didn't bother with a meet and greet. I figured if we hated them we could always switch later on.

I called our pedi before DD was born to find out how to "sign up" and because they do rounds at the hospital I delivered at I just told the hospital staff they were my pedi and then one of them visited us while we were there. Then I made an appointment after we got home for her first "well visit". I could have attended one of their meet and greet sessions which are done in groups but I already felt comfortable with my decision so it wasnt necessary for me.
We chose ours based on a bunch of family recs and that they were close by. They actually don't have privelages where I deliver, but it's not a big deal. At the hospital baby is checked by one do the peds there, they will tell you when to schedule your first appointment. Called our pediatriation from the hospital and scheduled it. There was no prior sign up needed. We completed all the paperwork at the first visit.

I got a bunch of recs, both from my local board, and my OBGYN. I actually wanted a smaller practice, that had practicing rights at our hospital. We ended up going with one of the ones my OBGYN suggested (who turns out, she went to med school with) and did a meet and greet with her. The practice is awesome, with three docs, extended sick hours/same day appointments, and they have a strict vaccination schedule (which I didn't realize was really important to me, until I started talking with her.) They will be coming by the hospital on every day we are there, and checking on the baby, as well as we need to make an appointment with them the day after we are discharged from the hospital.
I did find it interesting that I put more thought into finding a pediatrician then I ever have for myself. And it kind of made me wish that there was a no charge "meet and greet" for adults and their doctors. It never occurred to me, before looking into baby doctors.
